The last couple of trips I have had problems connecting my laptop to the free wireless network at the airport. I have used it in the past but the last couple of times have been weird.

I get "Acquiring network address" status but never does connect. My network card is fine, I have been able to connect at SL and my home wireless network recently, so the card is fine.

I know my way around a computer but I'm not great with networking.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Have had the same problem, on ocassion it can be repaired by right clicking on the wireless icon on your toolbar and click repair, this will disable and re enable the connection. Other times this has not worked. It is definitely a crap shoot with the wireless in the SJO airport..

I just bought a little 10" HP tablet PC to use for travel. I bought it used, set it up at my office, and it connected to the network immediatly. I then took it home and got the same behavior yours displays. I took it to Best Buy to have a tech look at it. He turned off my windows firewall, and it connected to the Best Buy network without a hitch. Back home - still the same problem. I went WalMart and bought a cheap USB wireless adapter that is about 1 inch wide and three inches long. I installed that and now I have no problem at all getting on my home network, and the speed is better than my other (newer) HP laptop.

Our problems might be similar but maybe the solutions are not. Good luck.

Orange, it almost sounds like a problem on their end. When setting up wireless access points they usually have a block (200 or so IP address) of IP address that it can hand out. It sound like it has ran out of IP address to hand out. Does it mean that 200 people are on it at the same time? No, when a wireless access point hands out an IP address it does with a lease and after a set number of time it will release that lease.

Is this what is happening? Who knows.

I work for the IT deparment on a community college here in Houston and I have seen the exact same thing with our wireless.

Have you tried searching for other available networks? They seem to be everywhere, almost. I have had some luck with another network when I’m not having luck with the default one.

I posted a question in the “sexual health…” section about the security of wireless networks. For purposes like banking, so as not to hijack this thread 8)

Is it safe though to do banking from SJO assuming of course that you can get hooked in?

Squirrel88 - you might have solved one of my life’s little mysteries. I have been diddling with flakey wireless internet access. (i.e low signal) for a few days. It seems like if I can hook onto one, and keep it busy (say with a stream from my favorite Jazz station), I don’t lose it. Otherwise the connection comes and goes, and I have to look for another.

Funny thing,, sometimes I can pick up some signal from US West Airlines, for a few minutes every day. Must be coming from their planes. I can see the planes taking off from my apartment, so not unimaginable.
