I haven't seen this mentioned yet, but Itsallgood and I checked out Mercado Central while I was down in October. Wow! What a place. Literally dozens of little ships of all kinds. We spent several hours in there checking out the different food stores, eateries, and trinket shops. It was pretty much an "old school" experience and really fascinating.

During the day I frequently end up sitting along the rail at the Presedente,
Swilling icy fruit punches recharging the batteries & filling up the wells again. That ATV tour is an awesome experience also. Somtimes I get a mate or two & hire a van & driver & head out for the beach, lots of adventures along the way. Mercado Central can also burn up lots of hours if your curious. Then there's always New Fantasy & Zonz Blue.

I agree about the Mercado Central

I have been to the Mercado Central several times - probably about 10. It is amazing the number of eateries in there and all the variety of shops. I even remember seeing a pet shop packed with dogs, cats, and birds.

It is also nice to walk down the pedestrian walkway to the Mercado Central and watch all the chicas.

One day I spent most of the day at NF. It was very slow and I was the only guy with 10 girls. I would walk one girl out and bring another one right back . I planned on just relaxing and watching TV but you know how these plans end up. That was a very relaxing and memorable day.

Where exactly is Mercado Central? Is it a market place?

It is a public market area, a little run down, built I think about 1880. It is about a block square and looks like it started its life as an open-air market with stalls, and over time, a steel support structure with a roof was added to cover the whole thing up. It isn't much to look at though.

If you leave the Hotel President and walk to the west about seven blocks, it will be on your right.

I like the place and the variety of people, stores, items and down home CR culture. If you want to eat tico food at a tico (well, sort of) price and flavor then there are a number of eateries at your service.

Dongordo is a frequent customer there....they should hang a plague honoring his patronage.

I first stumbled on to it in the early 70's and it has changed little except for the number of tourists frequenting the place. Back then they had an alley way carved into it with some entertainment by locals.....only a vague memory of that.

As to the topic of what to do and where to go. Check this board's recommended drivers and pay that person to drive you for a half day or full day to various points of interest in and around SJ and outer areas. If you do not speak espanol then select a driver that can half way understands your back home english and tip him for his efforts.

Also, it's always nice to let him escort you to some out of the way watering holes. If he gets a bit tipsy.....then feel the excitement of navigating the narrow streets and insane drivers back to your abode.

Shit, I can remember a couple of times when we had to park the cab and call for another one to get our crunk asses back to civilization. Then again .....shit happens.

I've been drinking vodka every day for 45 years and I have certainly never found it to be habit forming.

I have taken the public buses all over Cost Rica starting with my first trip when I went to Jaco, Manuel Antonio and then Cauhita on the caribean side. I have also bused to about everyplace with in a couple of hours of San Jose for day trips. Costa Rica is a great country with much to see beyond San Jose. I hope to live there in time and it won't be in San Jose but one of the small surronding towns. My present first choice is Greica. rbc100

I really like it when they have festivals in Morazon Park. Ticos know how to have a good time. I went to an arts and crafts festival with some great music and just hung out. At night they even had fireworks and it was very cool.

This seems like a great idea, to check out one of the local towns, but I have no idea how to catch a bus. Where would I go? How do I know which buses go out there? Any advice? Be specific!!! Thanks guys!

Drink. Allthough one morning I had to suffer through 2 hours of dancing with the stars (John O'Hurley edition) cause Mia was wounded and whining and he started cheering for O'Hurley and drinking soda out of the mini bar to rejuvenate. But I have never been there longer than 4 days and I have done several tours solo. Enjoyed Tabacon and the springs. But when there with the big boy he doesn't want to leave the gulch/bar/casino/MP/sportsbook.
