OK, I’m gonna chim in here. In my opinion after briefly sharing a couple of drinks and some good conversation; this good fellow looks honest. He seems to be a “guy’s guy” and (now putting on my Customs Hat) upon first observation, “he’s probably not smuggling drugs, he’s not packing uncooked meat and agriculture items, and he’s probably not packing a suitcase of pearls from Hong Kong. So, why look in this guys luggage, I think I will look in the eco-tourist’s luggage.

Having said that, and given it some thought, El Silencioso, would you consider “muleing” in a box of Partigas Series D #4 cigars for me? Just wondering.

I swear by Zacapa 23 for drinking at home... Although I always have a few bottles of others for friends who don't care or appreciate the quality, like Abuelo, Brugal, and Flor de Cana.

Being a rum drinker I'm glad that Centenario is made here and is the cheap bar rum everywhere, drinking Bacardi whenever I'm visiting North America is just brutal For the record if I'm mixing I mix with Diet Coke too, it's way less sweet than the normal stuff and I don't mind the taste at all.

Anyone tried the Zacapa XO? Every time I'm at the store I look it over longingly...

How come nobody clued me in to the fact that we can bring back 2 litres of spirits duty free from CR?

I'm glad that I had a few minutes to check the State Dept & Customs websites. I found the part about the increased allowance in items brought back to the US from the Carribean & Central American countries. It basically appears as though the duty free exemption is doubled from $800 to $1600! That's alot of coffee beans!

I would have been plenty pissed if I had brought home one bottle of rum only to find out later that I could have brought two!

Having just completed a tasting of Flor de Cana 5 yr, Centenario Commemortivo, Centenario XX and Zacapa 23 the Centenario XX is the winner by a nose and I am mildly buzzed. Some good notes on a few others available in CR

I drink the Flor de Cana 5yo as my regular drink down here. The 7 is better and the 12yo is great. Flor de Cana and Centenarrio have very distinct and different tastes so you will probably prefer one or the other. I also had a bottle of Cuban rum that was 15yo and I believe the name was something like Montecluza (sp?) I believe it was a left over from the Thursday night MG bash at the SL penthouse Labor Day. It was spectactular and even Prostoner who doesnt drink enjoyed it.

How much is the Zacapa XO? It's hard to find in the States. The same thing with Demerara 21. Hard to find! Anyone try the Pyrat Cask 23?

I still say the best rums in the world are made in Guyana (Demerara)
and Guatemala (Zacapa, Zaya). I think Flor de Cana is overrated, but everyone has different tastes. The Ron Centenario XX from CR is very good.

Yeah, I tried it at the Colombian bar (Chicheronera Rancho Allegre) and have bought a bottle or three over the years. It is a GREAT value but nowhere near as good as the top end rums we have been mentioning. I would rate it with some of the Nicaraguan rums and Ron Abuelo mentioned above. If you want a good cheap rum it is a fine choice.

For some reason this is MORE expensive to buy at the duty free in CR than a retail shop in the US. I can get a 750ml for $31+ tax here in S Fla whereas they charge $36 at SJO. Go figure.

Only thing I have found that I like about Granada Nicaragua so far--am in my 2nd day of a 4 day trip-- is the price of flor de cana.. Bought a bottle of reserve 7 yo for $7 and a bottle of centanarieo12 yo for $17. The 12 yo, they do not even keep on the shelve in PALI here. You take the empty box to the regester, pay and they bring you the bottle. Tried both before and never notices much difference, but blamed it on not trying both back to back. Tried both today one after the other and still could not tell much difference. Infact if anything, I perfer the reserve7yo. AND FOR ME,IMHO, the good old Centinaraio de CR is almost as good as either, thou more expensive in CR than the 7yo is here. If I have to rank, I guess the 7yo might be a hair better than the CR rum
