Lets say a friend of mine has to keep in touch with someone in the states every night but it would not be good for Costa Rica to show up on caller ID.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for the info.

Your friend could probably use a product like www.spoofcard.com and just enter the number they want to show up on caller ID.

You can easily get a Vonage account with a cheap vonage adapter, but you'll need a phone. Alternatively, you can buy the little USB dongle that Vonage sells to use on your PC. You can get a phone number from anywhere, and even change it whenever you want (though it will cost you a fee). You'll need broadband access to use it though.

If he goes to one of the internet places to use the phone it comes up as either no number or a switching # or unknown # and does not say Costa Rica. Does the same with a 199 or 197 card. When I go away and call back to collect rent I never say I am in CR on vacation . I always tell my tenants I am in Alabama helping my uncle with his rentals. It has worked for going on 10 years and I have never been busted.

I'm from South Florida, and carried my Vonage phone adapter to Del Rey and plugged it into the high speed internet connection in my hotel room. Boom, dial tone immediately, 772 area code. Received all calls to my 772 area code home phone and returned many local calls to my 772 area code. NO LONG DISTANCE CHARGES. Vonage kicks ass. Just purchased the Vonage V-Phone adapter that plugs into the USB port on your laptop and lets you make local calls and receive local calls in a wireless WIFI enviroment. You can toggle your Vonage home phone number to the V-Phone adapter without getting a separate Vonage phone number. Vonage always tries to get you to buy a separate line for this service. BS, you can toggle your home phone number. PM me for more info.

Talk about a subject that has come up a hundred times. Speaking of a hundred, it has probably come up as much as "don't pay $100." Anyway, I agree with MadGerman. Get a Vonage account. Or, Yahoo Voice is GREAT. Just get a voice out account. Calling in the US, the number comes up as all 7's to other US numbers.From CR to US I have been told it comes up as "unavailable." It's cheap and all you need is a computer, microphone and broadband connection.....and a quiet hotel room. If you want to add a level of credibility you can also get a voice in number. Most likely you can find one in your local area code. (or any area code you wish). Back in my story tellin' days I would usually say I was going to see a buddy in North Carolina. I would chose a phone number with that area code. "Here honey, call me at this number in NC." Of course, I would never answer but I would check the voice mail at a convenient time and return the call with Yahoo Voice. Problem solved.

Another option, if you have T-Mobile, is that T-Mobile has a nifty VOIP cell phone. If you're near a wireless connection, you can make calls over the internet (or receive) from your standard cell phone number. I've used it down here when a friend had one.. it was nice.

Since when did the Del Rey have high speed internet ports in the hotel rooms. I knew they had wireless (which is weak at best), but physial ports? Is this for real? And/or is it in just some rooms?

Great, a cord. Speed 56kbs in the states, 10kbs in CR. Very, Very slow. Use the computers in the lobby, much faster!!!!

I stayed at DR this weekend and can reconfirm they have wired highspeed ports in the rooms. I actually found this out after thinking I'd have a wireless signal, and couldn't pick one up. Called down to the front desk and they set me up with an ethernet cable. Great signal, the ethernet port is right next to the phone line jack.
