I clicked on the link then clicked on Spanish.
All 5 files are ".rar" files.

5 minutes later I tried to refresh the link and suddenly it and all previous pages came back as "The page cannot be displayed".

Interesting.

Same thing happened to me. If some downloads the files you can download Winrar demo for free. It will recompile these types of files.

I was able to download part one, then got the "server too busy" message. I'm pretty sure you need all the parts before trying to unzip them.

I have been using RS for about a month now. I like the fact that it uses pictures, so I usually can guess the correct answer.

I have found that it works better for me to have a Spanish/English dictionary for the words I don't understand, so that I can comprehend all the words in the sentences, not just what is generally meant due to looking at the pictures.

I use the system daily, and am at RS1 level 5 or so. I generally go back over the previous materials until I am at 100% comprehension. I'm probably slower, and more anal than most though.

You can buy used RS on-line for about $89.00 each. It comes complete, without the box.

Health & happiness...

Thanks for the link.

My biggest problem with downloading bootleg versions of software is the habit of crackers (criminal hackers) to embed malicious code in them. I know way to many people that have installed bootleg software that they downloaded, only to find that their banking and credit card passwords and information has been stolen by a keystroke logger embedded into the software. Use with caution folks.

CD,

Do you truly know 'way too many people' that have fallen for this ?

I have downloaded thousands upon thousands of applications, and I know of many that also have, and we have never had any rogue software installed that would log our bank/cc passwords.

Consider yourself extremely lucky as it does happen all the time. Now, if you have good AntiVirus software installed, malware software installed, and intruder prevention software installed, don't forget your firewall, always keep your programs updated with the most current version of virus definitions, etc.

Forget about Rosetta Stone. I downloaded all 5. Opened the first one..... no go for installation. You need a password. All 5 went to the trash can.

Berk....

Yep, I do. In fact, there is a big problem with folks downloading versions of XP, Vista, photoshop, dreamweaver that have trojans installed in them. I saw a lot of these cases because I've worked everything from tech support to information security to system/network administration for several companies. The some of the banks have gotten better recently, using methods beyond username and password to verify that the computer logging into a particular account is an compter you normally use, or at least one that you authorize.

Writting malicious code that logs your keystrokes and other nasty things is VERY EASY. The challenge is packaging it in a way that the victim will install it on there system. bootleg software does that for them.

Using this program myself, I can honestly say it's amazing (Rosetta Stone). The technique they use is mind blowing and so easy. They use a method that forces you into learning the language. It feels like they throw you in the country, allowing pictures and phrases to do the work. It like going to kindergarten for Spanish lessons. they use the same method as if you were learning English for the first time as a K*D. It's really neat stuff you will be amazed on how good it works.

I would highly recommend it for any language. I think in about 30 minutes, I knew and understood more Spanish then I did in the 2 years that I took Spanish in high school. I give it a A+

I studied Spanish in school for seven years, (60's and 70's) and was 90% fluent. Time made me rusty (somewhat) but ho house adventures kept me above the average tourist level. That said, Rosetta Stone is great!!!! I also rent hispanic flix on netflix, watch hispanic news and Canal De Historia EVERY morning at 7:00 EST for an hour on Direct TV (Channel 271).

Have not tried Pinsleur, but am sure is is good too. The point is that if you spend an hour a day working at it you will increase your fun and your game.

Advice from an old man.

Rosetta stone is a committment. And you can get bored or frustrated with it quickly because it doesn't teach you "conversational" spanish, rather it tries to teach the language as a whole.

I agree with most others, Pimsleur is better to get up to speed, then maybe Rosetta stone to advance yourself.

I agree with this. I bought Rosetta stone 1,2, and 3 here in CR for about $750 and I think it is a little difficult.

What exactly is Pimsleur? Is it a computer program, and how does it work?

Thanks!

The new version 3 Rosetta stone is much different than version 2. Version 2 does require real commitment to the language because you do start out learning "boy, dog, plate, shirt" long before you learn to say "hello". For version 3, Rosetta claims you now only need 50-60 hours of study per level instead of the 150-200 for version 2. I have seen it demo'd and it's quite good and along the way you learn to speak, read and write your language. It's also geared to be more conversational now and divides the lessons up by categories that allow you to focus on different areas of interest or subjects in a language you might want to understand more. Version 2 gives you no way to locate grouped subjects.

I reviewed the study guides for version 2 and version 3 and it appears your proficiency in the language is far great by the end of level 2, version 2, than the end of level 3, version 3. Version 2 just has LOTS more language in it. So for the time and effort it seems like you really learn the language with greater depth.

Rosetta's new version 3 is way easier to use and provides more than enough foundation that by reading and speaking with people you should be able to advance in the language naturally.

It is a series of CDs or MP3s(if you get them off a file sharing site) that teach your language of choice but at a basic, useful level and progress from there. But it teaches you the things we as travelers, and mongers need to know right from the start.

Most languages have three levels(I, II, and III).

http://www.pimsleurapproach.com/

If you order the levels you get text workbooks so you are in essence learning to read and speak it.
