I've been down to the Golfito area 3 times. The first time was with a couple of amigos 8 years ago, and the nightlife did not look too inviting-- really rough around the edges The next two times I brought my own.
You might want to consider doing the same, unless things have changed drastically in the last 10 months.

they have an area called the Zona Roja...funky but
cheap...real funky

A lot of the towns in CR have Zona Rojas, Quida Se - watch out - in all of them. Funky could be an understatement...

Very limited action in Golfito. If you need company, I would bring it from SJO. However, a ride over to Paso Canoas will provide some action. Most of the action is east of the border crossing/bus station. It's not SJO but it will do the trick. Many Dominicans there.
