This is a very timely topic for me. I sat next to an attractive tica in a park next to the Gran Hotel a few days ago. She looked about 35 years younger than I, and was dressed rather plainly. I started chatting with her and very soon took her to lunch at the News Cafe. She said she is a nica visiting her sister, who lives in SJ. I then suggested we visit my hotel (the SL), to which she readily agreed. We had a great session that went on for hours. Just before she departed, she asked me for a ridiculously large amount of money to pay her rent. Of course, I gave her far less.

The moral is that if a girl much younger than you finds you irresistable, expect to get a request for money.

This is probably true, but being a total stranger who just agreed to acompany you to your hotel room after lunch should have been a dead giveaway too

I hate to do this to you, but there are actually 2 Nicas that have been working the park area in front of the Gran and National theater for atleast 6 months. One is visiting her sister, the other her brother, go figure!!! They "are here just for a couple of weeks and could really use a little help with money for food, to help brother/sister out, or for bus back to Nicaragua"

One even went so far as to tell me that she was NOT A HOOKER and just needed a few dollars to get back to her husband and K*ds in Nicaragua. And that she had NEVER DONE ANYTHING LIKE THAT BEFORE, BUT WAS DESPERATE, and also that her husband would kill her if he ever found out (only part of her story I believed)

When in doubt, always best to err on the side that she is not. I know that is not what is meant here, but never blatantly ask a chica who has not given you obvious signs. . I have been livid a couple of times when chicas who were working for me told me some guy just came up to them in a bar and asked how much. And they look nothing like working girls.

AND this brings up another question!!! WHAT DOES A WORKING GIRL LOOK LIKE?????

Bang, wow, I really feel like a fish who fell for the bait. Pretty deflating! However, I can't say that I didn't get my money's worth.

Thirdworld, I really didn't suggest a commercial transaction with the nica. We spent a good deal of time chatting before I suggested a visit to my hotel. I was then, naively, pretty surprised when she made a RFM.

Panther, wasn't talking about your particular case, sorry. Yeah, it can definitely happen like that at times. I don't know, maybe it is because I have been here for so long I take it for granted. I can probably tell 99% of the time if a chica is working. Even if not their clothes, something in their demeanor. And in Jaco, probably more so. The hookers definitely dress like hookers here.

But 90% of the chicas walking the streets of Costa Rica and most other Latin countries would be harassed by the police, and many probably take in for prostitution in the states. I too have spent much time in Latin countries for many many years and can usually tell by their actions, and am very aware that most of the chicas wallking the streets are not "working" chicas. But for many gringos who are not use to seeing girls dressed soooo sexi (normal here) it can be very confusing and flustrating. I have had guys comment that it looked like every chica was a hooker.
