Thought I would bring this up and see if anyone had any comments one way or the other...

Interesting how in Costa Rica many of the venues feature almost exclusively female bartenders - including the Del Rey, Key Largo, Sportsmens, Zona Blue, New York Bar, etc. The only exceptions to this seem to be the strip clubs.

OTOH - in Rio, bartenders in Help and the termas are pretty much exclusively male. Don't know about other venues around the world, but I'd be curious to find out.

Any theories as to why it has become such a female-dominated trade in the monger venues in CR, and not so much elsewhere (or at least in Rio)?

Having just come back from Thailand it's a mix on male/female. I say the percentage is 60/40 with 60% women.

I would bring up "Hooters". The owners believe that guys like to sit and flirt with girls and will stay longer. In "Help" , the owners don't want you chatting it up with the bartenders, they want you chatting with the girls.

There may be something to the Hooters analogy with female bartenders; however, as for the second comment, I'm not too sure about the owners in Help caring one way or the other who you're talking to in there. The girls work completely as independents - the house gets no cut of any revenues they produce (though they do pay cover to get in).

My theory has always been that female bartenders and servers get away with a lot more... A guy is a lot less likely to bitch out a female bartender for slow service.

Also, men will probably stay longer and order more drinks from a female bartender... It's just a primitive subconscious thing.

Just a quick thought - could it have anything to do with the fact that all of the CR businesses mentioned in the initial post are (I think) American owned?

Very true, and a good point. I have been frequenting many Tico establishments over the past few trips and have noticed it is about 50/50. Le Grillon had mostly male bartenders, but on one occasion there was a female bartender as well. VIP #1 the same, mostly male, but I did see one female tending bar. Bar Camelot had female, but I think they were on the menu.

At least 2 of Tico MP's we toured with Don Gordo and RBC last week had bars, one was manned by a Male bartender. The other Female.

Then there is ZB, SL, DR,KL, etc, etc.... with all female bartenders....

So based on this, I would have to agree that most if not all of the establishments that cater to Americans are overwhelmingly FEMALE, the off beaten path, more Tico establishments it is more of a 50/50 mix.

Why, I think some hit it rght on the head with a cute bartender can get away with a lot more from the male population and two, it keep us in the bar spending more money with something attractive to occupy our time...

GR,
Keep in mind (unless things have changed) that at HELP the drink tickets are sold by females. Good way to keep the money out of the bartender's hands (and pockets).

Customers get their drinks (and drinks for the girls) and get back to dancing and drinking and not hanging around the bar. Gotta keep the booze flowing since that is where they make their money.

In places like the DR, KL and even SL, female bartenders add to the "ambiance".

In Rio, both places you mentioned have no money changing hands at the bar. Help more or less makes money on bulk drinks and cover and isn't trying to upsell you on anything, just churn it out. In the other places, I forget what they are called, thermostats or something, they want you talking to the girls and perhaps buying a drink, but thinking about more drinks and renting rooms. In both places, it's 100% a "Service Bar" role, not too many women in those types of places. It's mostly set up just to pour drinks and not have any chance possible to rob the place, hence the tickets for drinks at help. No chance for issues. Also, if I owned help, I know there would always be problems with guys hitting on the girl bartenders, drunk guys, so I would definitely have guys manning the stations, guys willing to work.

In the Dom Rep, it's almost 100% woman bartenders, most of whom are available   except in the clubs, a few guys.

I think for the most part, the Rio thing is a bit of an exception, leading me to think each case is it's own case.

If you owned a place, each place, you would probably make a different call in each situation. No?

PS- GR is outposting El S in this thread... the battle is on

I had also noticed this the few times I had been there. I haven't seen too many waitresses in restaurants either. It just seems to be a mans job in Rio. Good thing though, because it would probably take a few of those hotties out of the termas and we wouldn't want that now, would we?

Certainly not. Conversely, it wouldn't hurt things at all in CR if a lot of those "legit" bartenders were thrown into the "real" pool of PFP chicas...

My take is that the places where there are onsite premises or the girls are hustling for drinks, the bartenders won't be female. Places like the Key Largo, Del Rey, NY bar and others hire females because they do not offer onsite services, unless you count the $10 chica fee at the Del Rey, and all in all, considering some of the drink scams the bartenders pull, the bartenders probably generate more revenue than they possibly lose by keeping some monger from going upstairs and getting his chica fee.

I think it just comes down to money.

Bars everywhere cater to the male customer. You will be hard pressed anywhere in the world to find a female going drink for drink or spending buck for buck that a male is spending.

So that would have to be my first reasoning, that guys are simply the ones spending the money, and thus you are better catering to them.

Second. Most social trends have girls going to bars in groups of friends. Their more prone to sitting down, drinking slower, and chatting. Guys are much much more likely to visit bars on their own; often on the prowl for some single babe. An easy target for conversation, and to save yourself the humiliation of standing around by yourself? The bartender. Girl bartenders can flirt back, the guy gets comfortable, she gets his ego going, drinks start pouring, and all this is happening while she is still serving drinks for other customers.

At the same time, youll notice most big bars, in big cities have a majority female bar staff, with usually a male tossed in to keep them in line.

Just my take on things.

My theory is flawed though, as I know some very happening spots that have both all female staff, and all male staff.

Regardless, I think male bartenders generally do a better job with more technical drinks. Im not a big fan of the hire a hot blonde with big boobs, whom doesnt know how to make anything besides rum and coke trend.

GR,

My theory is not clearly thought out, but it goes something along those lines:

In Costa Rica, the reality is that the prostitutes are not the best looking honey-bunnies in the world (4-7.5's on average). Being a really hot bartender makes you all the more enticing among the crowd of blah-looking prostitutes and, as a result, the bartenders get better tips for looking so much better than everything out on the market, so to speak. Because they look so much better than what's on "the other side of the bar," there's a certain novelty and mystique to them that drives men crazy. They get very large tips on a usual basis, and the extra attention, cash and gifts are occupational perks to being a cute bartender in CR Gulch.

Not so in Rio...

Even if a bartender there were a drop-dead, absolute-10, she still would just seem like just another face in the crowd, where the vast majority of the honey-bunnies in most of the popular places (i.e. Centaurus, 4x4, Solarium, etc.) easily fall in the range of 8-10's (no question about this... the hottest girl in Del Rey on any given night will only seem like a high 7 AT BEST at Centaurus). The novelty of being beautiful behind the bar would be non-existent in Brazil as it is in Costa Rica, simply because all the prostitute kittens you can actually bang on a whim are just as hot as anything you've ever seen. That being said, you won't get the big tips, the extra attention, the "diva" status that you would otherwise get by bartending in places such as Del Rey or Key Largo. There's no novelty and thus no financial "umpfh" by being cute behind the bar in Rio... It just doesn't work that way there.

There's more to this thought, and I'm sure I could have expressed this thought out better, but this will do for now... I'm trying to keep off the board!!

No one has ever accused a Tico of making a good business decision
