If Hotel Freebird still has the $30 a night CRT special, this may be an option.
I liked the place and all the reviews here have been very favorable.

For stay of a month an apartment is more economical. Check out Scotland and Sudamer apartments. They are not only cheaper but you get a bedroom, living room, kitchen as opposed to a hotel room and unlike Hotel Freebird you have a private bath.

You might want to check out Hotel Rex. It seems to be a pretty good place for the price of about $300 for a month. I was going to stay there but the Rex was booked for my stay. Its really a short term apartment as opposed to a hotel. Heres there link: http://www.cr.cx/hotelrex/
Best to call the ower Jim Marshall who seems like a nice guy.

I just stayed at Sudamer for my last trip. I liked it, and will repeat for trips over 7 days (less than that and I'm staying at the Castillo). There is security at night who usually watches over the whole block. Clinica Biblica, a hospital, is about 3 or 4 blocks away, so there are tons of farmacias ( including a few 24hr places) along Calle 7. Also, I felt perfectly safe walking from my apartment to Clinica Biblica or one of the resturants along the way at night, although I would be leary walking in the opposite direction TOO late at night.

LOTS of Trannies in the area, but they weren't bunched in groups, so they won't bother you much as you're walking. Best of all, Las Gatitas is literally on the next block and is open from 10:00am-10:00pm. That makes it about a 90 sec walk to $20 pu*sy. Also, La Mansion, Pantera Rosa, and a few other MPs are within 2-3 blocks of the Sudamer.

Now for the bad. It is a royal pain in the ass to catch a cab from there in the evening, and unlike a hotel, there is no receptiionist to call one for you. It isn't uncommon to wait 20 min for an empty cab to come by. If you are in a rush, you are better off walking the 3 blocks to clinica biblica and catching one there. I did see 2 roaches while I was there. Then again, I was there for 2 weeks, so that is pretty good for SJO standards. :D

There is an evangelical chuch across the street that has evening services (ironically, about the same time the trannies hit that same street). Those folks like to sing, and sing loud. I was in an apartment furthest away from the church so it didn't bother me much, but a buddy whose place was directly across the street had to move to another hotel because it was too noisy.

Hope this helps.
