Robber stabs man in neck
on downtown pedestrian mall

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

A man walking on the San José pedestrian boulevard around midnight Wednesday became a victim of an apparent robbery attempt and suffered a stab wound to the neck, said the Judicial Investigating Organization.

The man, identified as Oscar Rojas Vargas, 23, was between the Hotel Balmoral and Hotel Presidente, a well guarded and heavily traveled section of the pedestrian boulevard even at that hour. That section is between calles 7 and 9.

Another man approached Rojas, and a struggle ensued. Rojas Vargas was at Hospital Calderón Guardia in delicate condition Thursday night.

Ya think he was wearing shorts?

CRT IN COOPERATION WITH DON KING & BOB ARUM PROUDLY ANNOUNCE THE "PUT YOUR ASS IN A TAXI" FIGHT TO END ALL FIGHTS !!!

In the BLUE corner:............The Fear Mongering Tourist

In the RED corner:................The Ignorant Resident

This is a fight to the finish and will end when:

one or the other side says "uncle" 13 times without stuttering

or

admin locks the thread

or

everyone finally comes to their senses and decides everyone has their own personal safety comfort level and should adhere to that not one that someone else is comfortable with.

Are you talking about the street guy "Oscar", gringo English, that works the front of the Pres? If so, I think he looked older than 23 but it could just be the life. I am trying to remember his last name... "Vargas" sounds right. Hope not.

Would that be you ID?

Personally, I think this was good thread on the subject. There are no right or wrong perspectives on the subject. It really depends on the individual situation I think the thread brought out all sides of the issue quite nicely without a lot of name calling and bad behavior (at least until you came along and added your 2 cents).

I remember a couple of years ago when I was walking back from the La Gran Via to the DR and turning the corner at the bottom of the hill was yellow crime scene tape blocking the street. We had to take a detour to get back to the DR. Seems the cops had shot and killed a guy in the parking garage next to the NY Bar. I don't remember exactly what the deal was. Then there was the working chica shot dead several months back towards Parque Morazon. Then LationHeat got his ass jumped.... and then.... the list keeps on going.

It's NOT about fear... it's about making those aware of their surroundings when they make it to town. For the vast majority of us this kind of stuff doesn't happen where we hangout in the States.

If you deciede to change a ceiling light fixture at your house using insulated tools may not be enough protection. Turn the power off at the breaker and get a fiberglass latter to stand on. It's just common sense... kinda like wrapping up Mr. Monkey when he goes out to play.

Take a taxi.... don't take a taxi..... we all get to choose for ourselves.

Berk.......

The thing is Poco, stuff like this happens in the nearest metropolitan area where you live and people just go about their business. This stuff happens in big cities. San Jose is a big city. The guy got in a "struggle" with the robber, and got phucked.

Check with the US State Department web site. They keep very good records. Facts are the facts. Deaths of US Citzens involved in roberies is very, very rare in Costa Rica. You don't fight back and you give them your stuff, 99% of the time you walk away unharmed.

Sure robbery is a danger. But not as big of a danger as swimming in the ocean or riding in a car in Costa Rica. The statistics do not lie.

as usual Kc you are so quick and willing to jump on someone you failed to read and comprehend what had been written previously.

Just to refresh your memory

that is where the reference to the "ignorant resident" came from. My post was an attempt at humor. If someone with a sense of that objected I would feel I missed the mark but seeing how it was you who objected I guess I was successful.

I totally agree with you Berk. There are risks with every choice and the risk factors vary according each individual and every situation. This board is a good place to bring out all of the perspectives so each can make their own informed decision that is best for them.

OKAY ID, I'm an asshole, I stand corrected. I am not afraid to admit when I am wrong. I apologize. But don't let it go to your head. :D

Peace brother.

Okay, beased upon the reassurances of the local residents, and since I am just a casual internet viewer who doesn't know squat about the crime risks in San Jose....

1. I will walk from the Presidente to the Del Rey or Key Largo 24/7 without fear.

2. I will cross Morazan Park on foot after dark, just because there's so little risk.

3. If I give up my money easily, the bad guys will not kill me, at least 99 out of 100 times.

Is that what I'm reading from local residents? :?

Yeah, bad stuff happens in Chicago, New York, Albuquerque, Los Angeles, the Pits of Jax. We usually avoid those bad areas where crime happens.

Problem is, theGulch is a very small, concentrated area. The easy money (gambling, hookers, tourists) lures the bad guys, and crimes happen.

Okay, so what if the U.S. State Department has statistics that show you're more likely to drown or get into a colllision. Does that change the need to remind (possibly first time) visitors to the Gulch that there's crime there?

Okay, okay... personal security is personal business. Yeah. Okay.

I'm concerned about Joe Average reading CRT for the first time. All you in-the-know local residents have trivialized the danger presented in this thread, and I think it's a horrible idea.

Remember, Joe Average, soon to become Joe Newbie Monger may not be accustomed to being accosted in the street. He may not know how to react. He might get his ass killed.

Isn't it better to exercise caution, not only in what we do but in what we write here? If I only took BangBang's advice, I'd wind up dead, if I didn't know the scene as well as I do.

Particularly in an open section of the forums, I believe we have a responsibility to give warnings where they are needed. There was IMHO no reason for the local "experts" to jump on here and downplay every risk. The risks are real, no? People do get stabbed and or shot near the del Rey, no?

Again, the local "experts'" comments are valid and if read by people with a bit more street smarts and travel experience. However, the last thing we want to do is to lose a new CRT brother, simply because the locals have a vested interest in portraying their little city as being as tranquil as Petticoat Junction or Mayberry.
