This is a live report from the Hotel Castillo....... Tuesday evening at about 10 pm, a tractor and trailer parked in front of the Hotel Castillo and unloaded about 2 dozen slot machines. The machines have been placed in the patio area adjacent to the billiards room. At this time, they are not operational. No further details available.

CRAP!
Does this mean that my nice quiet "garden room" will now be just off of the casino floor?

Two police cars and several Policia were there Wednesday night just after 9pm. Any idea what was going on?
The cops rolled up with lights and sirens.
It appeared to be serious.
I didn't hang around.

I agree Crap!
Don't know what the plan is, but I could do with out the added noise.
The reason I stay there is because it is quiet.
I wonder if the slots were purchased by the Garden's Restaurant and not the Hotel Castillo?

Slot machines would seem to be an ill advised move in a place many like because of the peace and quiet that it provides.

It's been my "home" for quite a few visits to SJO because of the peace and quite. Slot machines are a dime a dozen in this town. I don't think it's going to draw anyone to the Castillo. Very little will probably change, but if it does I'll be looking for a new "home" more than likely.

I wish you guys would stop whining. If the hotel has an opportunity to make a little more chedder, which that is all that it will be is a little. Let them try this new opprortunity. You might even start to see more chicas then you have in the past. No need to taxi over to DR or walk down to SL. See how it works out before crying.

If your room is not right next to the slot machines I dont think it will be any nosier than when the back bar is open or there is a concert at Hemingways or behind the hotel.
Cry babys!!!!!!!!!!!!

You are right. What was I thinking complainng about buzzing, whirring, shaking neon light bedecked machines within 50 feet of my sleeping head?

Besides the wonderful staff, the thing that makes Hotel Castillo special in my book is the peaceful environment. I always felt like it was my oasis from the madness. I am sorry to hear about the machines going in.

Maybe they can put the machines on silent mode.

I talked to Tom at the Gardens restaurant this weekend, they plan on making it into a gentlemen’s club. I wasn't 100% clear on the benefit of joining, the price seemed a little steep, but he said that they planned to have top talent there and they want to go totally upscale. It will be interesting to see how that all shakes out.

If the slots are on the patio next to the billiards room, isn't that leased by the Bar downstairs? I guess the slot machines make sense if they are going the gentlemnan's club route.

I understand why they are doing this to the bar and resturant, The resturant portion was empty on most of the days I stopped by in November. I just don't think it is going to work. Have high end gentleman's clubs really done all that well in SJ?

I definately don't think that this is going to be good for the hotel. The main building may be a little isolated from the noise, but their new wing is going to be directly exposed to all of the noise in some new gentleman's club.

I'll keep staying at the Castillo unless the changes have too much of a negative effect on my experience. That staff is so great that I probably wouldn't bother trying to find another hotel and would just switch to apartment living.

Tom (Gardens Owner) is a great guy. I like his little restaurant.

I really didn't "get it" as far his concept was concerned. He feels like he is going to be able to attract top talent. Personally I did not see where there was enough value to justify the price. It didn't seem like there was a lot included in the membership.

But to be fair, he had been partying (Packers fan on game day), so maybe he didn't do the best job of explaining it to me.

For the first X number of members it will be $500 for a year. After that $1000 per year. I am not going to try to speak to the benfits of membership, because I did not "get" that part and I do not want to risk misrepresenting his concept.
