Last time I was in CR it was mid March, same time I'll be there this year. Personally, I prefer wearing shorts in the warmer weather such as CR in March, however, I noticed that almost everyone wears long pants there, is there a reason behind this?

Tico's don't wear shorts as a rule so guys wear long pants to "blend".

Me, unless it's chilly, I'm in shorts. I hate being hot.

Bah, it seems that no one but Americans wear shorts on a regular basis. A lot see it as juvenile. But I say screw 'em, we're the ones with the money. 8)

When I went to Europe with my high school ten years ago, our teachers would not allow us to wear shorts at all because it made us look "touristy."

Make sure you wear shorts at all times. That way when the ticos are looking for someone to mug, I won't be bothered (in my long jeans). Thanks!

There called hot-pants on you Spanky. Only goofy gringos wear shorts down there, if you don't care and look sexy in them then pack your shorts.

And you look sexy in your cargo shorts RBC :D Not sexy in a Spanky-way (thank God) but sexy in a seasoned adventurer-traveler way. I look like goofy-gringo so don't wear them anymore unless at la playa.

RBC, I'd say you and Prostoner are just about mug-proof no matter what you wear.

If you are a gringo you are a gringo and your clothes are not going to fool anyone.

I don't fully buy into that. Maybe you can't *fool* them but you can go unnoticed or stick out like a sore thumb. I have dark hair and eyes and a tico gut - I'm a little tall for a Tico but I do notice that if I walk down the pedestrian avenue (which I do a lot) down to the Mercado Central wearing cargo shorts, sandals, and a tee shirt I get a lot of action from the guys trying to collect money for the Ch*ldren's hospital, I'm more likey to have taxi drivers call to me and more likely to be approached by the local dude who want to show you how to get to ZB or NF or wherever. Walk in the rain with no umbrella and you look even more gringo.

When I walk around wearing black pants, those awful black shoes and have my shirt untucked I rarely get approached by these same sorts of guys.

Maybe ID has red hair, green eyes and skin that is as white as the driven snow....

Berk you are a hot-pants guy too so shut up. RBC is a crocodile-hunter cargo shorts & hiking boots sexy mongrel. :P
I quit wearing shorts after one of the tours through some small town where the ijos were laughing at us gringos, our guide told me it was because of my shorts  and that shorts in CR are for Ch*ldren and la playa.
