I have been here in Panama over 2 years...and coming here over 3. This is the first story of this kind I am hearing. I also have to ask...what kind of police car was it? New? I did hear that there were robberies by police impersonators going down. It also sounds very strange that the first taxi didnt stick around expecting his fare. This sounds like a total set up by TWO taxis...and MAYBE a police impersonation. Obviously it is very upsetting...but I dont believe this is the "norm" around here. I personally still believe the police here are less corrupt than my experiences in Costa Rica. And you never know...the girl COULD be in on it. Which in my opinion is another reason I never take these girls out to my hotel. In service is much safer and MUCH cheaper. Especially if you were paying the standard Miami club take out rate of $300+...YIKES.

Sorry this happened to you Chi. I hope you got some license plate numbers at least...or taxi ID numbers that are on all licensed taxis here in Panama. If you got in a pirate taxi or non numbered taxi...you were definitely taking a high risk to begin with.

THis happens in every Latin country I have lived in ...so I wouldnt be quick to say it is MORE common in Panama than elsewhere. YOu were unfortunately at the wrong place, wrong time, with the wrong people...un benownst to you. It reinforces the rules of always watching you backside, dont take all your stuff with you in the street here or anywhere...and shit can happen especially late night or middle of the morning in these countries. Traveling solo adds greatly to those risks. Wish I would have been there with you...because I dont think it would have happened to two people...and I would have people to call.

If there are any details privately you want to send me that would help identify the police...I would be glad on your behalf to at least make a report...both to local authorities...and the US embassy. I'm going there tomorrow anyways. Its in all our better interest to try and track down these people or make noise anyways to the right local people.

Again...sorry this happened to you.

I would love to be able to give you info, but I have nothing. It all happened so fast, and I was on the phone with 911 at the end. I believe they may have been fake cops. However, the car was totally real. It had all of the standard equipment. I doubt the chica was involved as they robbed her too. She was also frantically calling my hotel and 911. Unless she is a great actress, don't think she was involved. I believe the whole thing was setup between the taxis and the police.

Other than this incident, I really like Panama. Yes - I believe this can happen in any latin country. That night, my time was due and I only lost a small amount.

I'll be in Panama City next month. Can anyone recommend cheap hotels there? I'm hoping for the $20 range. Traveling from Managua to Colombia on a tight buget, having trouble finding cheap place in Managua too. Thanks guys, I promise to post.

Hotel Euro is on Via Espana...towards the low end of town but not far from Veneto and other tourist spots. Not sure if chica friendly...but have AC, internet in the lobby, and decent restaurant with bar on premises. Last I knew rates were between 25-35 range. http://eurohotelpanama.com/

Hotel California is another low end possibility. This past week there were NO ROOMS in any decent hotel, but a guy I know found a room at the California. When I first came here, i knew some colombiana workers who stayed there...so you may be able to order on premises. Does have internet wifi. http://www.hotelcaliforniapanama.com/pa ... ngles1.htm

Good luck.

I was in Panama for a few days. Here is a good site. Didn't use it. But the pictures look legit. http://www.elcomplaciente.com/ZAFIRO.html

Here is a site with a lot of pictures of non-pros at the clubs. Some are very nice. http://www.dealante.com/categorias_nodo.php?categoria=1

Club Miami was not that good. Check out Le Palace. Le Palace was $20 open bar. There were over 30 girls all in glowing white lingerie from the black lights. There were some really hot chicas in there, a couple of 9s and a few 8s. It's worth going there just to see the little line dance all the chicas did together on the bar side of the club. They then do a conga line dance down the center of the club. Seeing all those tan bodies lined up like that was amazing.

But Golden Time should be your first stop. 20-30 walk by with numbers. 90 incall and 150 take out. Some real 9s in there. Good Luck.

Thanks Tman and BKT for the heads-up on the Hotel Euro. From the website, the Hotel California tarifa is either $44 or $27.50. Confusing, and hope they respond to my email requesting clarification. I'll spring to $30 in a pinch but have become accustomed to local prices when I travel.

The Footprint guidebook shows several in my buget but neglects to rate "hobby friendly". I have emails out to the CentroAmericano, Lisboa, Dos Mares, and Ideal, among others but responses are very slow (if ever). The Pension La Torre looks to have a good location across from the Venecia but no email address. Thanks again.

Ill confirm EVERYTHING Jsmythe23 wrote! And add that if you speak spainish and have big-balls, you can get newly arrived Columbians at the dive-brothels accross from the now torn down mercado! If you dont like the on-site rooms, just pass out your hotel address and offer 20$ for a SHORT, and they will happily come by! Also on the very long and heavily female populated ped. mall , it is just SO EASY to find a GF experiance!!! later

Sorry for bumping such an old thread, but I gotta know where Colorado Dan is talking about! I love dives, and I have no idea where the pedestrian mall is that he mentions here...

I would NOT go there after dark...or without a LOCAL wingman. Too many other safer places to go. Be adventurous...but use BOTH heads.

How much for airport PTY's taxi service into town?

Last Friday, I paid $28. Gringo price or not, I do not know. Damn I wish I would have remembered this thread before I went there. I'll know next time.

With all due respect ID, have u ever been to MDE?

It IS paradise! I go to CR every month, sometimes twice  , but MDE is still 10X better. U just better know your spanish or have a fluent wingman. MDE is the Beverly Hills of Colombia. Girl to guy ratio is 10 to 1. Simply amazing! IMHO
