Somebody told me that there's a hotel on the opposite end of the block from the KL (west side of block, calle 7?) called Hotel Rex. Supposed to be $10.00/night for a room with shared bath, or $18.00/night for a room with private bath. However, I haven't been able to find anything about it either here or by doing a search on Google.

My google search found the following web page for the Hotel Rex:

http://www.cr.cx/hotelrex/

It appears to only be a single page website (text copied below):

Welcome !

The Hotel Rex is situated in downtown San Jose, Costa Rica, and provides delux accomodations at incredibly low prices for guests who wish to stay for one month or longer.

We have 6 suites available, all with private bath, fans, and cable tv, some with king-sized beds, some with queen-sized waterbeds, located in an extra secure part of downtown, with washing-machines, dryers and full kitchen available.

Our rooms range from $200 per month to the delux double room at $325 per month !

Please contact Jim Marshall at 506-222-5883 or 506-256-8296, or even better, email me at admin@cr.cx for further details or reservations.

Thanks for stopping by !

If your friend is looking for value and still have a place where chicas are going to feel somewhat comfortable, I am not sure you are going to beat a standard room at Hotel Castillio.

Otherwise, there are a handfull of hostiles in the Barrio Amon area that apeal to the backpacker set that are probably cheaper, but I am not sure the guest policy will be to your friends liking.

You have to be kidding!!!
Have you seen the Park Hotel or the Hotel Asia? I think they would do it over someones final resting place if the price was right.

FYI EL Ciego, I inquired whether the Hotel Rex had daily or weekly rates, their response was that they had a 2 week minimum for $200.

The Hotel Rex sure looks interesting at the price, although the price Jim Marshall quoted me was a bit higher than on their website. He says he houses mostly repeat customers, and then for a two-week minimum stay, although prices are quoted for the month at $200.00 (room with single bed) to $350.00 (the only room of 8 with a king bed). In room safes, double deadbolts on doors, located next door to Bar Limon on c. 1 near av. 7.

Is it chica friendly? I didn't ask  but Jim when describing the location basically gave me walking directions from his place to the del Rey.

I also visited the Inca Real website. Price was quoted at US$45.00/night plus tax. A 10% discount is offered for stays of longer than 3 nights. All rooms have in-room safes, and breakfast is included.

All rooms also feature carpet...a rarity in SJ. Has anyone stayed there recently?

I stayed there two years ago. I thought you where looking for cheap? I think you can do better than the Inca Real for $45, the location isn't even that good. They didn't have in room safes when I stayed there. The rooms where clean but small and nothing special. Mine was near the breakfast area so I got woken up early. What they call breakfast wasn't much more than some fruit and toast. The computer in the lobby was so old it didn't even have 128 bit encryption in the browser. I would give the Frreebird a try before I stayed there again.
