U.S. jacks up visa fees
from $100 to $131

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

The United States has jacked up the cost of a tourist visa 31 percent from $100 to $131.

Earlier U.S. officials decided foreigners needed a visa even if they were simply touching down briefly at a U.S. airport on a commercial jet.

Then the United States said that instead of taking a digital image of one of an applicant's fingers, all 10 fingers would have to be scanned.

Now the U.S. Embassy here reports that the increase in the price is necessary due to the new costs related to the new technology and inflation.

An embassy announcement said that a 2004 study showed that the cost of issuing the visa was more than $100. One gripe by Costa Ricans is that the embassy does not refund the money if the visa is denied.

Those who already have paid their $100 fee at a local bank and have an appointment before Feb. 1 can obtain a visa at the old rate. But even those who already have paid and made an appointment for Feb. 1 and later will have to pay the new rate, said the embassy announcement.

ANd just to reinforce caution and for some of you not to waste money on this process, a majority of applicants are TURNED DOWN. And no refunds are forthcoming. I just had a friend pay for his Colombiana GFs process, including paying her ticket back to Bogota for processing as they have to do it from their home country. Of course, as i predicted to him, it was denied the same day. I dont know why some of these guys cant get it through their heads that our immigration department is NOT authorizing travel to single latin women from about any country...unless they can prove they have a job and real estate in their home country to come back to. And being your GF...or even your fiance...is not valid enough. This is why many airlines are now bypassing Miami and other USA ports for direct travel between Latam, Europe and Asia.

It's a shame our government allows illegals to cross our border at will and by the millions but refuses to let citizens like us develop relationships freely with girls we might happen to like.

I'm busting up here Tman, because on the Panama "New Club" thread you are blaming the USA for a law that Panama passed! I'm sitting here thinking man oh man, Panama can't even pass a minor no smoking law without someone pointing a finger at the big ole bad and horrible USA.

Good luck at dim there resolutions Tman. :)

Hey D...I'm trying to be more positive here. But you have to live here to see the huge impact and influence...and BATTLE...between the USA and Panama on contolling everything from banking, to the legislature, to the court system, to the canal. It is a stated fact...not negative attitude on my part. I am not being paranoid and critical. Actually, my comment on the smoking issue was meant more in satirical humor...based on all the other conflicts well documented here in Panama over the USA's big brother influences. In this case, yes, I slip a bit from not wanting to post anything negative...but as someone pointed out on this thread...some things HAVE to be brought to light at times even if not a positive. This is one of those things that in my opinion knowing about helps in a positive way for people coming here to understand what is going down and what the effects can be and are. I love my country, and my family and friends there. But do I approve of the current government's meddling in foreign affairs to the extent they do with their self righteous morality and financial payouts to those powers that "cooperate"...absolutely NOT. And THAT I have the right ...and perhaps obligation... to say without being negative or positive. Its just part of the Panama story.
