From Tico Travel, a local travel agent in Fort Lauderdale:

American Airline Flights Begin

Starting December 13th, American Airlines will start a daily flight from Fort Lauderdale to San Jose, Costa Rica. This should help those looking for flights from the South Florida region as well as those looking for flights from the East Coast with another airport to connect through.

The flight times are leaving atr 2:30pm and arriving into San Jose at 4:25pm and on your return you will leave San Jose at 5:25pm and arrive into Fort Lauderdale at 9:05pm.

A super bowl trip, leaving 1 Feb returning 4 Feb woulld be 308.40 including taxes. Not too bad. Hmmm....

Dapanz1,
What schedule are you looking forward to seeing? Phoenix Rising posted the flight times. Only one flight per day....

Why so late on the return leg if it leaves at 5:25? Was that a typo?

San Jose is Central Time Zone. One hour behind us this time of year. We lose an hour on the return.

Gotcha...totally forgot about the different time zone. Sounds like a good deal but my problem is finding a connecting flight back to Tampa at that late hour. I think Spirit and Southwest's last flight to Tampa is around 8ish.

Another positive on this recent news has been more availability of flights out of the S. Florida area. As some are aware here, DFW to SJO has consistantly run in the $550 to $595 range. As of Friday, Holab can cutback on the aluminum can collection and now get fares for Jan for $412 but I do have to travel to Miami on the way out but a straight shot back to DFW.
Yet fares out of ORD,LAX and NY remain in the $269-$300 range

We're American Airlines......screwing their hometown base

Hey Texans are always bragging they are the biggest, baddest, richest, etc. so why shouldn't they pay the highest fares? AA knows how proud Texans want to step up and pay and pay and pay so they can continue to brag :P  :P  :P

Another positive from AA commencing service from FLL is the direct competition with Spirit, the only other airline flying to SJO out of FLL. It will create pressure on the fares and compel Spirit to get their act together.

In fact, it may actually be happening already. I arrived at the airport Friday at 10am for a 11:20 fllight to SJO and only waited about 20 minutes to check in. Employees were more attentive and helpful than in the past, and all the lines were moving quickly and effeciently. They seem to be getting the message. Hope so.

Sounds about right, TC. :D But I have a couple drinks at the airport bar and then go with the Jack Daniels and Cokes on the short flights.
