The cabboes try because they think they can get away with it. Like any other taxi trip insist on Con Maria up front and pay what it says when you get out. Both my trips to Eden the taxi tried to jack me and I just laughed at him, paid the meter and got out. I also keep lots of small bills and get out first and pay through the window.

It seems that the taxis that hang outside the DR and ALWAYS try to rip off the Gringos, have a leader these days. Some of them try to grab me when I leave because they don't know me. However a taxista that knows me called out to me a while ago as I was leaving for home. I laughed at him,and said 3500 col to take me to Escazu. (correct price) He said "OK" then looked at another guy and the other guy told him the price was 6000. I uttered my usual profanity and went across the street to find another taxi that I know. So it appears that many of these ripoff artists are working for one person.

Actually, I live on the Escazu border, and I regularly take taxi's downtown. It has never costed me less than 5000c and, depending on traffic, is usually closer to 6 or 6500.

It's *NOT* 3500c unless you're coming from Fridays and going to Passeo Colon. At least not by the meter. Of course, the meter price went up about 2 months ago.

How do the mechanics of this place work when using a taxi? I understand that if you drive a car, the garage is for you to drive into and hide your car. If you are in a taxi, do they go in the garage and let you off, then leave? What do you do after? Where do you get another taxi? Do they just cruise the area? The place looks nice and I'd like to use it.

Lol, So you were in fact going from TGIF ;) That's barely Escazu.

Still, I find it hard to believe you could get to the SL for 3500c, even if the taxi drive takes backroads instead of Avenida Central most of the way. Once you get past the "curve" where traffic gets redirected down to Avenida 2, there's just way too much congestion.

This wasn't at midnight, was it? Lol.

My apartment was in Trejos Montealegre behind the Rosti Pollo and I took somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 cabs to the Sl in the last 18 months, going in usually mid afternoon not rush hour. The 3,500 is very accurate. I now live in Escazu centro and the fare is averaging $4,800. Now if you have the cabbies take you down second avenue it takes 15 minutes longer and may go another 1k. To the SL the shortest route is Autopista until it ends then the right beside the Pollo Campenero place to avoid Paseo Colon. This road ends at the Hospital and dumps you out on Paseo Colon. Take Paseo Colon to one block past the Penny Lane then make a left. Go to Av 7 and make a right. This will take you to the INS building. To get to ZB, SL Amon Plaza it is a major time savings over AV 2.

Yes any unit with the garage door up is available and the taxi pulls in and drops you off. You go in and pay for the room through a trap-door cabinet never seeing the attendant and also order any drinks, condoms, etc. When finished simply pick up the phone and the attendant will call you a cab. I believe the 15k (per chica) rate is for 12 hrs. The rooms are nice with king beds, stereo, porn on tv and waterfall jacuzzis.

FYI...Taxis have been charging $10 for Eden drop offs for over 5 years now. I'm surprised the price hasnt gone up. Its just part of the extra service and staying discrete. WHen you think about it...$10 for an hour isnt a bad price to pay. This is a case where it pays to have your own consistant driver who wont charge you these extra bonos.

Also many of us preferred inthe past a deal like Hotel Eden versus having these chicas in our own rooms or homes. MUCH safer...for your things.

It only takes one precaution: Everytime you get in a cab ask for the Maria or how much it costs to get from x to y, I look at the inconvenience as a chance to practice my spanish and practice saying fuckofff if I dont like what I hear. Problem is sometimes you relax because you get three honest taxis in a row so you feel comfortable and then dont ask the fourth and that one tries to rip you off...so always ask the price. Getting a consistent driver is a good thing as well once you have used them over 5 times then they are always ontime and never overcharge they become almost a friend but not, but enough to the point that they wont overcharge you.

bk,

I went down to the gulch last night. The driver drove down calle vieja down to the golden mile and went right past there. I checked the meter 1485c at the light by perimercado/tony romas. I watched the meter, and it was 3200c when we stopped at the light in sabana by the mickey d's. Drop off fare at the HDR was 4950c, and that was going the route you suggest (most of the cabbies go that way) and this was at 10pm. Very light traffic.

So, that was 3500c to the HDR. The SL would add at least 500c to that, given that it's not a straight route. Maybe i'm just being picky, but my original comments were not taking into account Trejos as the pickup/destination, I was considering Escazu centro or maybe Los Laureles/san rafael.

In any event, like I said, they did recently raise the cab rates.
