Ok, i've been going to the Motel Eden lately, mostly because I hate Asia and Morazon is usually full. I haven't bothered with any of the others.

One thing that has bugged me is that every time I go there, the cab drivers always charge me $10. It's, at most a $4 trip. I've tried to argue about it, but I don't understand a freaking word they're saying back, and my companions have been of little help.

Anyone know what the story is there? Besides a gringo getting ripped off? Is there some kind of fee the cab drivers have to pay to go to Eden?

Taxis never have to pay to go places. They usually get a big tip for going to places like mp's

So you don't know anything specific, you're just generalizing. Motel Eden is different than any other place in CR, the taxi's ahve to "check in" when they drop people off or pick them up.

I paid what the meter said, on the way back to the HDR the cabbie tried to pull that crap and I tossed him a little more than the meter and walked off. You're getting screwed and should take a spanish class or ask your chicas to handle it on your behalf and tell the cabbie to use the meter.

I did have the cabbie use the meter, it came out to about 1800 colones, and he tells me 4800 colones.

If this hadn't happened 3 different times, and every time it was 3000 colones more, i'd say you're right. They were just trying to screw me, but the same "overcharge" everytime? That's what has me wondering.

Well that is strange, that's the same thing the cabbie told me he added like 3k to the meter but it was coming back from Eden not on the way there. Have they ever tried it on the way back? He said something about commision but I figured it was just a scam and didn't pay it. Maybe 3k is just the standard gringo upcharge-scam for cabs to/from Eden. :? If they did get a comission like at some MPs/strip clubs they would get it from Eden not us.

You might just have to start asking up front, before you get in the taxi, how much to the Motel Eden? It may be some fee they have to pay, but I doubt it. But since they all know where it is, they should be able to tell you a price up front. Sometimes I have been charged more than the maria (meter) for it being late at night, like somehow that's standard if they are picking you up from in front of the Molino Rojo at 3 am. The worst I ever had was a ride back from the bullfights (or bull runs) at Christmas time. The guy hit me for just a stupid fee, and it was embarrassing for me to argue over $5 excess charge in front of my novia (pardon me you non-novia guys). I fessed up rather than fight it out. It seems like your best bet would be just to ask in advance.

Best thing to do... Generally if there's more than 1 taxi waiting it's pretty easy to get the rate you want.

This was interesting. I stopped by the HDR today while I was downtown, not to find a girl, but to just ask cabbies about their rates. I got 5 answers, all 5000 colones.

It gets weirder and weirder.

You might already know this, but the cabbies right outside the HDR have a sort of rip-off conspiracy going on. Everyone who wants to get a legitimate fare walks a half-block or so to escape them, and then hail a normal taxi and get a normal fair. So maybe those taxis outside the HDR weren't the ones to ask.

I think this is most close to the truth but often at a cost of time, stress, safety, inconvenience etc. If a short route don't mind paying 1-2 bucks more. They know we have the money so kinda feel guilty bargaining them down on everything. All depends on the magnitude but 4800 for a 1800 far is BS. Most I would pay is 3000 especially later at night and in dicier areas.

FYI-There are many drive-in love motels in San Francisco area. I think that where Eden is right? It may be the most well-known, but also the most expensive. Ask the taxi to take you to a different one. My girl and I went to one last week. The cost was 10k for up to 8 hours. You drive into the open garage. The room was nice, very clean, had a jacuzzi, menu for everything from douche to burgers. They had porn on tv and different lighting and sound settings.

Eden is not in that area. It is north of the gulch near the Raddison. It is the closet to the gulch and the easiest one to get to.
