Another option is to take 3mg of melatonin a couple hours into the flight. It'll knock you for 6 hours at least.

I swear by my PSP + spare battery for flying... Have a good assortment of games I haven't finished yet, plus I regularly update the memory card with fresh TV episodes or new movies :) Noise reduction headphones are great too.

A five milligram tab of valium does the trick.

A friend of mine frequently flies from Chicago to Germany for work. According to him, the secret is getting some Halcion from your doctor for the trip. Halcion is a very quick acting "cousin" of valium. He claims that you take the very small pill aboard the plane after you have had a few drinks. The medication puts you to sleep within 10 minutes! Then you wake up refreshed at your destination of choice. Halcion is used by dentists and many doctors to put you in a "twilight sleep" for dental or medical procedures (tooth extractions, minor surgery) that you don't want to be aware of.

Ask for it by name!

That is great unless there is an emergency. Valium is mild enough that you can still function albeit a bit slower.

Ditto, a DVD player and noise cancelling headphones. I also always request an aisle seat so I can get up and walk around a bit. I do not sleep well on planes, but the neck pillow provides comfort if I try to nap.

I typically take ambian...but I do not like taking sleeping pills - I don't really feel rested afterwards and I have difficulty falling asleep the following night. If someone knows of something better, PM me.

Believe it or not, I get a lot of work done on my laptop during a long flight - being away from the Internet procrastination is great for work.

And I always have my trusty Pimsleur in my iPod. Depending on the destination, I am either go through a Spanish, Portuguese or Mandarin lesson!

My friend swears by the original formula Dramamine washed down with a glass or two of wine before departure. I haven't tried it because I don't often take pills, but when I have traveled with him on the customary red-eye he really is asleep before the plane takes off. When we get to Houston he get's off the plane and goes back to sleep again after breakfast. Wish I could do that.

He said it was suggested by an MD. There must be something to it because there is a non-drowsy formula. I don't get motion sickness either but that would be another benefit.

I hesiate to suggest this, but perhaps a shot of Nyquil followed by a single martini? Two hours of deep sleep on a plane is a liesaver.
