Im only comparing it to the Sportsmans Lodge down the road. Where for 10 dollars more you can have a nice looking room.

I receive 3 discounts off the published rate when I stay at the Castillo. I stay 7 nights, pay with cash, and am a CRT member. For a standard room that comes to $34 a night including tax. That's $238 for a week.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the SL standard room is $55 with a 10% discount for CRT members. Add in the tax and that comes to $57.42 a night. For a week we're looking at $401.94 or a difference of $164.94 for 7 nights, $23.56 daily.

Berk....

I would gladly pay the 164.94 difference for the quality of room, service, convenience and atmosphere of SL. I would never recommend Castillo and would never again stay there. The last night of my trip in ZB suite, I brought back a colombiana to my suite, she asked me why ZB. I told her that I stayed 4 days at Castillo and didnt like it, so I decided to switch. She says to me "Oh no, not Castillo, that place "es muy fello!" She asked me if I found it on the internet, I said yes. She said she was sorry about that and hoped that it didnt change my mind of Costa Rica. I told her that I had a great time in C.R. no matter what.

This was your very first trip to Costa Rica. You haven't learned yet that 99.78754% of all hookers will tell you what you want to hear. :D

Berk....

My only bad experience at the Castillo is that they were already booked up for my November trip :(

Well I guess to each there own. If you love Castillo great. I just posted this as my opinion as a Newbie. I felt the rooms were in much better conditions at SL for a comparable rate as well. And I wanted to let other newbies know as well. As a newbie I thought hey for the price of a standard room at SL I could get a suite at Castillo, what a bargain. So, if PRICE is your only factor then getting the cheap room at Castillo is the way to go. I on the other hand care of about quality and convenience, and its difficult to top SL or ZB on that.

I am in no way bashing you guys that love Castillo, I just feel that its not for me. And I felt that a contrasting opinion needed to be posted for other newbies to view and consider.

come on guys, lets stop bashing a useful newbie...

Jmoon, I appreciate your opinion of Castillo, as that is one of the reasons I have never stayed there. I did not think it would be up to what I would want in a hotel...

The other .21% are just dumb or haven't learned this yet. Or maybe that Colombiana was spoiled by going to the nicer hotels and suites with the high-rollers and she did consider the Castillo "sub-par," and considers the gringos that stay at cheaper hotels budget travelers. Let's not take it personally every time someone disagrees with our opinion on something or jump on those for having a diifferent review/opinion. For instance my experience at the Morazan was disgusting- to sum it up with one word and I'll never book at that dump again :x but some guys love the place, looks like Jmoon noticed some bad things about his room at the Castillo and prefers more upscale lodging, ymmv.

Thanks Paco. I gotta agree!

Jmoon,
Thanks for your report on the Castillo. Many of us do appreciate your info. It's always good to hear the good AND the bad about any establishment. Especially knowing how things are constantly changing in SJO. Last week's castle might be this week's dump! Just like my "10" could be your "5". It's just one person's opinion....

MG

Your 10's usually are my 5's ;)

But there's nothing wrong with gettting 2 5's to make a 10...

Everyone is going to have different expectations for what they require in a place to stay.I am in Mexico at least 4 days each month and sometimes stay at places like The Castillo(clean, inexpensive, good service) and sometimes stay at places like The Presidente(more expensive, good service). It all depends what your looking for.

A newbie believing what a hooker tells him needs a little direction on the rules of the game. :D The Castillo is valued by a number of CRT members. In order to "balance" out a negative review I posted my opinion. As I have already written... to each their own.

You've never even been in the Castillo Paco so BITE ME! :P
