Hotel Castillo is very secure however. They have very good control over who goes in and out. One time I was a little drunk and literally left my door open (not unlocked, open) and left for hours. I came back to find the door open as I left it and none of my stuff had been touched, including a camera that I left sitting out.

I have nothing but praise for Hotel Castillio, for a property in its category it is a very good choice.

Just booked again with the Castillo for my late Nov/early Dec. trip...quick & easy. The staff is great, very friendly. Doubt I'd ever want to stay anywhere else when in CR.

Also, I've noticed that when some of the chicas in the BM ask where I'm staying & I tell them, they claim not to know where it is, & are usually impressed that I'm not staying at the DR or SL. Now, I don't particularly care about impressing them, & quite frankly don't believe it when they say this, I'm just putting it out there, make of it what you will. 8)

Thanks for the info, Im looking forward to the Castillo. I originally wanted to stay at Sportsman L. but they only had available two of the five days that Im going to be there. And since I didnt want to hotel hop with my stuff. I figured the Castillo was close enough. After reading some posts, Im curious to check out the suites at Zona Blue. For 200 bucks and half priced girls doesnt sound too bad at all. Maybe my second trip, I'll reserve a night there.

Yeah, I was curious about staying at ZB as well....although I generally don't like paying as much as their current rates ($195/night) for a hotel. I may possibly give them a try when their regular rooms are ready.

COPIED FROM MY TRIP REPORT:

"I stayed at Hotel Castillo and was very very disappointed. I was even in one of their so-called suites. The rooms are dingy, smelly, moldy, paper thin walls, oh and shitty breakfast too. The only thing about this place that is good is the staff. In fact the staff is GREAT with customer service. One night I showed up sick from drinking too much and they took me to my room, made sure I was OK and locked the room door. They are very gringo friendly, even though Im not a gringo, I did notice they treated them well. They are chica friendly and do not charge extra. Its not the staff's fault that this place is just SUCKS. Maybe some major remodeling would make the place better. But Im sure if they did that then rates would go up. I dont understand why so many of the forum members swear by this place when for about 10 bucks more you can stay at The Sportsman's Lodge. Any girl I spoke to (in spanish) told me that they dislike the Castillo for its smelly, moldy rooms.
Not Recommended: 2 stars And its only because they have a great staff. "

I will say your experience differs from mine and that's over the course of numerous stays at the Castillo. I have made my home in 3 different rooms. None were moldy or smelly. I could stay anywhere I want in SJO, but I choose the Castillo for several reasons.

You have to remember this is not the US. It's a 3rd world country. The breakfast is typical and simple. I find the place clean and roach free compared to the Del Rey lobby bar area.

Each to their own. I am more than happy with the place... that's why I keep going back there. :D

Typical for an inexpensive hotel.... how's that. The place "ain't' the Presidente!

They're "hookers" ingognito. You can get "screwed" and NOT EVEN KNOW IT. They are that good.   They will prey on the sucker... the downcast... the lonely guy who couldn't get laid in the Del Rey with a wad of $$$ in his pocket. The depressed and drunk souls are their victims who willingly give up their cash for a warm smile or a "hola" how are chew baby? So yes.... HolaB... they are like... no, they are cocksuckers.... I mean cockroaches. Nasty, dirty little cockroaches that spread their vile disease from one hapless gringo to another.

RUN FOR YOUR LIFE! STAY CLEAR OF ALL OF THEM FOR GOD'S SAKE! RUN NOW AND NEVER LOOK BACK OR THEIR ABHORRENT AFFLICTION WILL INFECT YOU FOR NOW AND FOREVER!

I am already infected so I don't count! :P  :P  :P

Im only comparing it to the Sportsmans Lodge down the road. Where for 10 dollars more you can have a nice looking room.

I have had multiple great stays at Castillo. But, who knows, maybe they do have one moldy room :? It is still high on my list as a great value.

I receive 3 discounts off the published rate when I stay at the Castillo. I stay 7 nights, pay with cash, and am a CRT member. For a standard room that comes to $34 a night including tax. That's $238 for a week.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the SL standard room is $55 with a 10% discount for CRT members. Add in the tax and that comes to $57.42 a night. For a week we're looking at $401.94 or a difference of $164.94 for 7 nights, $23.56 daily.

I would gladly pay the 164.94 difference for the quality of room, service, convenience and atmosphere of SL. I would never recommend Castillo and would never again stay there. The last night of my trip in ZB suite, I brought back a colombiana to my suite, she asked me why ZB. I told her that I stayed 4 days at Castillo and didnt like it, so I decided to switch. She says to me "Oh no, not Castillo, that place "es muy fello!" She asked me if I found it on the internet, I said yes. She said she was sorry about that and hoped that it didnt change my mind of Costa Rica. I told her that I had a great time in C.R. no matter what.
