Hundreds of passengers began their Columbus Day sleeping on the floor at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport after their Spirit Airlines flight to New York was canceled late Sunday.

Angry passengers waited for hours after they boarded Spirit Airlines Flight 710. The flight had arrived late to Fort Lauderdale from San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The passengers, hoping to get to New York on Monday, said they waited inside the plane for more than an hour, did not have access to food and Spirit Airlines charged them for beverages.

About four hours later, after passengers were asked to leave the plane, the airline issued hotel vouchers, as some passengers slept on the floor at Terminal 4.

Spirit Airlines canceled the flight without a clear explanation. The Federal Aviation Administration is not reporting any delays.

Airline employees booked some passengers on later flights, and the airline is working on arrangements on an already busy flight schedule.

I think I'd pay double to fly Taca after reading about their problems. Eventually they will run of out new unknowning passangers since I can't see them getting too much repeat business, but there are many cheapskates whose only motivation in life is money and are willing to endure anything to pay less, so that statement may not be entirely accurate.

I for one have never had a problem on spirit, and like was stated there are always those who try to save money, There are always those that complain about eveything.

I won't fly Spirit domestically but given that I do not check bags when going to CR, Spirit is the only airline out of Ft. Laud to SJO (until December when AA starts service) and their flights are often (last minute) substantially cheaper than driving to Miami and flying someone else (not to mention added headache of going to Miami and putting up with that airport), I will not not write off Spirit. But only to SJO and I fully intend on flying AA to SJO in 2008.

I would GLADLY pay 200 more to not fly spirit.

Having said that, they're the only ones that fit the time frame of flights sometimes...

Although I'd rather fly TACA than any american airline (except continental), I COULD see me flying spirit, just because of the schedule again someday. But I'll have to have forgotten about my previous nightmare before I do that...

I also agree MG, and did the one that posted the original message have a seat on that plane, I think not, There is always someone who will bring up the negative, and they look for the negative, They never post anything positive.

Give me a break.

This crap happens all the time on other airlines too. I have had similar experiences with Continenal, and Delta and could go off on the crap they pulled.

And all you Spirit bashers should at least be grateful they began their SJO service. Look what happened to AA fares this year! My last four trips MIA-SJO : 158, 158, 204, 216 including taxes. Last year it was hard to get there under 400.

Catch the SPIRIT!

Are you suggesting that anyone who posts a news article on this board had to be part of that news story to make the post relevant? Is that really feasible or desirable?

ID, I don't see how any rational person could make such a suggestion. It certainly would not be feasible or desireable.

Spirit makes no apologies for what they offer: low fares and no frills service. You want a soda, it'll be a dollar. Fine. They work fine for me to SJO from FLL (never had any serious delays and the price is always right). Plus their booze is the same as any other airline in coach, and they comp the sodas when you buy the little bottles of Jack. I don't like the 2 hour wait in FLL to check in and clear security when flying Spirit, but it beats coming to Miami.

On a side note the Bearded Clam was flying back to FLL from SFO yesterday on U.S.Air and was due to arrive (via Charlotte) at 11:30 p.m.. According to his text message of this morning he landed at 4:30 a.m.

I believe this reflects more on the state of air travel than Spirit. But what do I know? I'm still a Delta whore even after getting stranded overnight in ATL and having items stolen out of my checked luggage.
