Concerning Latinas and money... Bilko hits the nail on the head. Its hard not generalize about this, but I just know toooooo many regular, higher class latinas in CR, who operate as described.

Here are a few snippets from discussions with my novia about money. I should remind you that this girl graduated colegio at the top of her class with a 96% and nearly aced Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics. I'm not kidding about this either.... I saw her report cards and some exams.... cuz I didn't believe her.

Here's her view of money...

Savings accounts, Budgeting? Phuck that. Spend it. Spend it now. Who cares about tomorrow!!! I want new shoes. I NEED THEM and I cannot wait till tomorrow. If you don't buy them, I'm going to have a temper tantrum, until you buy those damn shoes. Credit Cards??? Don't they just have "money" in them? I thought that is was just "free money" that Americans can use, because they have good jobs. Why do you have to pay those stupid bills? I don't get it!!! Taxes???? Ohhhh my gawwddd.... you are soooo stupid for paying property tax or income tax??? You only give the government money, when they take it from you!!! Do IIIII have money? Why would I have money, when I know you are paying for everything?

In terms of being gracious and thankful.... This is my favorite one. I accused her of being ingraciosa, because she never says thank you... to ANYONE for anything. She told me that is sooo stupid and I only say thank you to God. Besides, you are my boyfriend!!!! I never have to say thank you for anything!!!! That would be like you saying thank you to me -EVERYTIME - after have we have sex. You are ridiculous!!! Shaking her head in disbelief....

By the way - the very next time we had sex, at completion, I whispered gracias in her ear. .... ugghhh didn't go over to well.

It never ceases to amaze me how ignorant some of the chicas are. I have met few who know what, or even where Washington DC is.

Last July I tried to explain to a chica the significance of July 4th. I thought she would be interested, since by coincidence, her birthday was also on July 4th. I explained to her that we celebrate our independence from England every July 4th, and consider it our nation's birthday, after we had a long and brutal war with them around 1776. The one thing that you have to remember and never forget is that when you go to DelRey or a MP about 80% of the time you really are dealing with the lower echelon, underprivildged and subpar intelligence level of the CR melting pot. So these facts which you state about their lack of knowledge should not surprise you at all.

Like I said. My novia is a straight A student and is NOT A PROSTITUTE. She is not some gutter chick who works in a massage parlor. Her dad ditched her when she was young and the only thing about life that her mummy taught was SURVIVAL and RELIGION. That is it!

That said, she made the best of what she had. Now, she works in real estate and has already brokered one deal.

Although I have not seen any studies on the issue, I would assume that you are correct that DelRey or MP chicas come from underprivileged backgrounds. However, I don't believe for a minute that they are of "subpar intelligence." In fact, I am struck by just how bright many of the prostitutes are in Costa Rica. I am not fully aware of the social dynamics of a chica becoming a prostitute, but I doubt that it is because they lack native intelligence.

Bright in what capacity?

Most of the CR girls I have met are of about average intelligence. Some are as dumb as rocks, others are pretty bright. The reason they seem less intelligent is because:
1)They have very little education
2)They have NO concept of long term planing/delayed gratification
3) Many don't seem to have any ambition beyond a pipe dream and maybe marrying a gringo.
4) They have very little knowledge or desire for knowledge of the world around them.

I met one girl at the del ray in the morning who hates working there. She kept asking if I knew any jobs availible. It was obvious that she is fairly bright. She has a high school education, speaks VERY good English, and wants to find another job. If she took some basic word processing/computing courses, she could do well working in some office that has to deal with Americans over the phone.

But the reality is, she stays at the del ray every morning until about 1:00 or someone pays her $50 for sex, whichever comes first, and then goes home. This girl sits in the Del Ray for 4 hours at most, does 1 hour worth of work and brings home $50 a day. That is $1000 a month. She tried working a legit job (housekeeping), but 10 hour days, 6 days a week, for $250 a month did not work for her. Until she can ween herself off of a $1000 a month lifestyle, all of that talk of quiting the Del Ray is bullshit.

The funny thing is that with how much money these girls make, they could easily save half of it. If they did that, in a few years they would have more than enough to buy a house/go back to school/start a business. But they just REALLY NEED that new cell phone or those new shoes.

Agreed CD, since the discussion is currently about chicas, money and ignorance I wondered what CiaoCiao was basing his statement on. Not to bash chicas or make generalizations but my experience is similar to most above and I'd consider maybe 5% - 10% (I'm being generous here) of them "bright" when it comes to handling money, planning for the future and knowledge of much outside SJO. Now if by bright he is referring to gulch-smarts and how to lie, having an email account to string along 4 or 5 gringos at once, coming up with creative RFM's, ability to hustle and make a lot of dinero using that sexy bod and pretty smile- then I understand.

Another thing to keep in mind is that most are young, inexperienced and uneducated in much else, hell I was ignorant about money and life in my 20's also. I don't think they are much different than many young women in our country, most lower class people are ignorant about money and matters outside the trailer park or their immediate environment, even middle-class college age gringas- have you tried to have an intellegent conversation with any of them lately? CR women do not have the market cornered on ignorance, that's for sure. I've met plenty of women in the states that shocked me with their stupidity. It is interesting Chitrekker and many others have posted that chica parents seem to teach them very little besides survival skills and religion. Anyway just like in the U.S. I believe education, hard work and saving are key, do a chica a favor and try to explain that to her- and good luck. They've been conditioned to live for the moment and get what they want by using what's between their legs and that's much easier than studying, hard work or planning for the future.

Why lament the chicas' lack of education? The less they know the more likely they are to put up with our shit.

I met a girl at the DR about a year ago. Said she was taking psych classes at the University and was taking a philosophy class. I quoted Nietzche to her and she shot me quotes right back. I was impressed at first - but the conversation turned too cerebral and the blood flowed in the wrong direction. No sexo. Good chat. no sexo.
