Pay at the pump; pay at the plate. One way or the other, corn is picking your pocketbook.
As demand for ethanol puts price pressure on more traditional uses for corn, the cost of feeding fowl is rising - and so are vendor bills to local restaurant owners.
"The price of chicken wings used to be 99 cents a pound. Now we are talking around $1.49 a pound," says Pierre Therien, a newly hired restaurant specialist with The Prakas Group and 24-year industry veteran.
This hasn't quite caught up to your dinner bill.
"Printing menus is expensive," Therien points out. The thousands of dollars it takes to draw up new menus means "you can't print menus every time a food item goes up. Your prices can't go up and down like a gas station."

I agree corn has affected pricing greatly in the last 6-12 months. Checkout the cost of a simple conatainer of your favorite yougurt. Twelve months ago the local grocery store sold an eight oz portion for 30 cents, yesterday the price was 60 cents. Corn is used in all types of packaging for the food industry.

As for menu costs, ever try DeskTop Publisher  Intial setup is time consuming but once it's laid out, changing prices on a menu is an easy process.

I got back home yesterday after a 4 day stay at the HDR. I definitely have to agree about how high the prices are on the menu compared to other places in the area. As for the food itself, I ordered several different items on the menu and thought it was all pretty good with one exception. I ordered a hamburger 3 days ago sitting at the bar in the back of the HDR cafe. After 3 or 4 bites I found a really long hair inside the bun that looked like it could have been from a dog or something. I nearly retched and lost my appetite on the spot! Today is my first full day back and I've had an upset stomach since I woke up (and have made multiple emergency trips to the bathroom!)

With fond memories, remember the days when the HDR BM Bar would have a mini buffet in the bar on the lower floor by the side door between 6 and 7 in the evening.

It was just the right touch to keep the party going with some chicken quesadia like offering for a couple hundred colones. It was all good and very special service oriented for the guests.

Oh yea and the rooms were $35. Chica fees were $10. Typically spent more on chica fees than food and room combined on any given day.

Come on, brothers. I arrive the day after Thanksgiving and this will be my first trip exusively devoted to mongering. My previous trips were spent with my Novia and her 3 K*ds. We ate out in Moravia a lot so I need some help with SJO. There are a hell of a lot of good and inexpensive resteraunts out there. Part of vacation is dining out. Hell, I don't eat at Mac's when I'm at home.

Yes there are many good restaurants in the Gultch that are very reasonable. Mariscar for Tico Chicken and rice....Costa Del Sol for good Italian and pizza, (if the fumes from the buses don't bother you, and my favorite Chinese restaurant is Wongs which is on Central just up from Mas Por Manos. For upscale,in my opinion the BEST restaurant in the whole area is Bakkea which is a 10 minute walk from the DR. Most other really good restaurants are a 10-15 minute taxi ride away.

If it was a "long" hair, I doubt it was from a dog unless someone in the kitchen has an Afghan or Wolfhound. Otherwise it was from a kitchen employee or a celebrity rat.

I thought from what he described the hair was inside the bun. That would make me believe that the problem originated at the bakery, who they buy buns from, as very few restaurants bake their own goods.

While that does not make the situation any less serious it should not, in it's self, deter anyone from dining at the HDR.

DUDE, I love the descriptive qualities of this post... I wanted to quote snippets of it, but this whole thing reeks of a raving lunatic (please dont be offended). Im impressed, and I commend you. thanks for your entertainment.

I normally like the local restraunts when traveling, but its good to know there is a decent KFC nearby if things go bad. Anything as tourisy as the Gulch sounds is going to have ripoffs. Will try the local ones recommended.
