A friend and I went to JR's several weeks ago. We both ordered the same thing, except I got cole slaw with mine. For the next 3 days, most of my time was on the toilet. :( I cannot say for sure, but I suspect the culprit was the cole slaw [which is made with mayonaise]. :?

On the 3rd day, someone recommended I go to a pharmacy directly across from The Caulderon Hospital, which is owned by a doctor [his office is right next door to the pharmacy]. The doctor works in the pharmacy in the evening. I told him my problem and he sold me 3 anti-bacterial pills, and told me to take one each day for 3 days. I took one that night, and by morning, I was completely better, and ready to get back in the saddle. :D

No pain.... no gain...

You just have to be careful. Not exactly sure how, but be careful.

JR's is still one of my favorites.

I've eaten there just about every trip, twice this trip (and in the same day  ) and I always get ribs, potato skins, anad cole slaw. Maybe I've just been lucky, but I'm batting like 8 for 8. The food was good as always but the ribs were little overdone.

Looks like they brought back the lunch special. Weekdays 11am-4pm. You choose one meat (ribs, steak, etc) and 2 sides for only 3,000¢. You get a 1/2 rack (6) of ribs, if you choose ribs. That same meal costs 6,000¢ after 4pm.

The pecan pie (warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream) is great too. Had it yesterday for the first time.

I went to this place. It's a little out of the way. I went during lunch. The ribs are delicious. I bet a meal like this would cost 30 in the us. I spent less than 15 including tip. However, it was very slow. I went during 1pm. The ribs were great. I think the location for this restaurant is terrible.

Directly across from the entrance to the San Jose Zoo and within walking distance of many tourist hotels  . So whats so bad about that location? :P Imagine how crowded it would get if they had a "good" location

I don't know what portion of ribs you had, but if you got the lunch special, you'd have spent $6 for 1/2 rack with 2 sides.

Location isn't the easiest to find. My first time I couldn't find it, those curvy streets. It's at the very end of a dead end street. The only good thing is that it's next to the zoo entrance. Even with said, at lunchtime, the place is packed.

Is anyone aware that there is some sort of a "dance club" in the same building as JR's Ribs? If you look at the building, to the right, there is a glass enclosed [what I believe to be an elevator] which goes up to the 2nd or 3rd floor. I never knew it existed until someone pointed it out to me. During my June/July trip, I stayed in the end room of the Castillo on the 2nd floor. Every Friday and Saturday night, the parking lot was full and loud dance music was coming from the building. A huge spotlight was panned back and forth over the parking lot. The ticos and ticas arriving [in some cases by the van full] seemed well dressed and upscale. The expensive cars in the parking lot indicated the same. The particular gringo that had pointed it out to me said that he went there once and it was nice.

It is called the "80's Club". As you can guess, they play the retro music from the 80's and 90's as well. They mix it up pretty good. You take the elevator on the right side of JR's to the 3rd floor where the club is located/starts.

i've eaten at JR's (just with a couple of CRT dudes, no TVs) and it was pretty good. not quite top end, but the ribs were solid. that lunch deal looks like a pretty good value.

My wingman and I dined at J.R. Ribs this past Saturday afternoon. As we were staying at the Clarion and headed to the SL, it was convenient. Plus I had read many reviews and am a big fan of ribs here at home.
I ordered a half rack of ribs, he went with the bbq chicken. Both came with beans, cole slaw, and a baked potato. I did not eat half of my slaw (remembered Zebra's caveat) but ate everything else and found it to be good (would concur with Orange that the ribs are a little overdone). What did surprise me was that the ribs were $7k colones, the chicken $6k, and add two beers apiece and the tab was close to $40. Regardless, it was a nice start to an awesome weekend. :D
