quote="PacoLoco"]That's scary, I know of 4 people in their 40's that dropped in the last couple years. I was told if you have a heart attack in your forties you probably won't live but if you're over 55 or so you might survive, is this true and if so, why?

[/quote]Very sad indeed Chi, my condolences.
Paco, I do not have any verified numbers to post, but I assure you that "heart attack" victims in their 40's, on the whole do not die more frequently than older victims.
24 years of interactions in the homes of "Heart-Attack" victims is what I am drawing from here. Allow me to elaborate on this.
The term heart attack in and of itself is very, very vague. The actual term that is applicable here is Myocardial Infarction.. Which interpreted literally means death of Heart Muscle.
Many people experience forms of chest pains. Often times, these pains will be labled as a "heart attack" or more often in varying forms like "small heart attack, or Major heart attack".
In actuallity, Angina is the proper term to be used.Literally interpreted as Pain that is attributable to cardiac in nature. Again, angina is not a heart attack, unless death of the heart muscle occurs.
These "angina episodes are usually manifested by 1 of 3 instigators.
1)A blockage of the Coronary arteries(by a clot or by plaque that has disloged and blocked an already narrowed cardiac vessel.
These instances are what often cause the Sudden Major Heart Attack, that is the cardiac muscle that is "downstream of the blocked vessel" and is beginning to die due to lack of oxygen to the tissue,, these tissues begin to die(myocardial infartion), this is very painful. Left untreated, Depending on the amount of heart tissues that are being blocked from blood supply,,will result in many complications.(from rapid death to lingering and varying states of debilitation.
2)Arrhythmias: This is the change of your normal heart beat electrically,,
again, many factors can cause this sudden change in heart rhythm, the bottom line is that due to this electrical malfunction, your heart is not able to adequately oxyginate itself(due to disrupted blood flow by the erratic beats). These episodes can be as simple as a few missed beats(PVC's), all the way to the catastrophic situation known as ventricular fibrallation. This condition is always fatal unless the heart is Defibrallated, which is the delivery of the shock that most people can relate to seeing on medical shows. Keep in mind that the previously mentioned cause 1(blockages,) also will lead to these arrhythmias, and the need for defibrallation.
3) Spasms of the coronary vessels. These are more esoteric and difficult to diagnose. People experiencing sudden cardiac pain and all the associated symptons often times go undiagnosed, due to the fact that by the time diagnostic equipment is applied, the situation has resolved. These spasms are usually found to be present after patients have been fitted with a home monitoring device to catch these events when they happen..
I will conclude this long attempt to answer the topic, Do people tend to die at higher numbers when they have a heart attack in their 40's as opposed to those who have heart attacks when they are older ???
No they do not,
However, unfortunately the situation of denial and unfamiliarity with what is happening with their 40 something year old bodies often will cause a delay in seeking the needed treatment in a timely matter, with ensuing tragic consequences. These worst case scenerio cases are very shocking and stand out to us all. The sad truth is that 100s of thousands of americans die each year from cardiac disease, you can look it up, truly staggering numbers,, but in the end, you will find that the older folks actually have a much higher mortality from TRUE HEART ATTACKS.
If you feel the classic symptoms of heart attack,(just one or a combo)
Sudden severe chest pain(sharp, dull ,heavy, and all points in between)
radiated pain to jaw, arms(most commonly the left), back pain
Nausea
profuse sudden sweating
Difficulty Breathing
lightheaded
