Special bulletin from AM Costa Rica

The national emergency commission predicts a tsunami. perhaps as high a
two meters (about 6.5 feet) along the Costa Rican Pacific coast
tonight between 9:20 and 9:45 p.,m. The cause is the major earthquake that
hit Lima, Peru.

Emergency officials urged residents of the coast to put distance and
height between themselves and the coastline. They suggested a distance of
about 1,600 feet.

The quake-spawned wave is expected to visit the coast from south to
north and include the south and central Pacific as well as beaches on the
Nicoya Peninsula.

Oh, I think there will be a tsunami at the Playa Flamingo Coast come August 31.

Mucho Gusto himself is predicted to cause a stiff 3" wave that will be felt all the way to the inlets (and maybe outlets) of Colombiana.

The national emergency commission has called off the tsunami alert for the Pacific coast of Costa Rica for tonight. The action came after the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center canceled its alert that was issued after a 7.9 quake hit off the coast of Chile this evening. The high water, perhaps two meters (some 6.5 feet), was scheduled to reach the coast between 9:20 and 9:45 p.m., the emergency commission had said.

Whole coastal communities of Costa Rica were being evacuated when the alert was canceled, according to residents.

Went to Hotel Poseidon around 730 to pick up clients for dinner. That is when I started hearing about the earthquake. At this time they evacuated Jaco and said that there was a tsunami warning for a lot of South and Central America. I took my clients back to my apt. and we got on the internet. One of the guys got the site for the Pacific Tsunami Center in Hawaii I believe. There was a number on the site and one of the clients called on their Blackberry. They said the warning had been cancelled. We called back a couple more times over the next two hours. When we saw we wouldn't evacuate, we went downtown to eat. Was a ghost town, everything closed. The only place open was Jaco Taco so we ate there. A lot of people went to Villa Calletas to party. High enough not to worry. On the way home, the Monkey bar had opened. I'm sure it will be hopping after all the excitement. And that, folks, is the report from Jaco. Didn't happen but is a definite possibility. Hope there aren't any aftershocks.

No Tsunami happened because the earthquake did NOT crack the ocean Floor

The devestation and loss of life in Peru, especially in totally destroyed towns, like Pisco, south of Lima , mostly Inca native settlements , is heartbreaking

This situation really shed some light on the Warning System. I was staying in the Best Westen Jaco Wendnesday night and no one gave a warning! I waited for over 30 mintutes for a taxi to take me to the BB. Finally, I flagged a driver to pick me up and take me to the BB. We found out the BB was closed (damn no ticas) at 8:00PM due to the expected tsnunami. The BW Hotel staff wanted to move me to the fifth floor to wait out the tidal wave. I said screw them since I remember Indonesia. I jumped into a bus with a group of Mexican tourists and headed into the mountains like everyone in Jaco.About 95% of Jaco was closed by 8PM. The Mexicans were very cool with me jumping into their group. Their driver was also on CNN that night.

What a scare! This was to be my first trip to the BB.
