I was having this phone conversation the other day with a friend who told me that "pit bulls bite less people than golden retrievers" which of course had me on the ground laughing. He was all incensed about the dog fighting organization run by the Falcons quarterback. The ironic thing is that we are both big hunters and in fact, we are hunting doves and bunnies in a few weeks. We are doing a big 7 day elk hunt in the fall. I did 2 African safaris last year. I shot the heart out of a gold medal oryx in Namibia. My favorite shot was a head shot on a baboon at 300 yards while it watched me from a cliff. Stupendous!
Anyone who thinks dogs are "mans best friend" hasn't been attacked by them. They commit breach of contract all the time. How about that caretaker who was eaten by the 4 dogs in Hollywood last week? I read stories about Ch*ldren being killed by dogs all the time.
I have no problem with dog fighting. In fact, in the old wild wild West where men were men, women worked in brothels, opium dens were popular, and gambling was the major entertainment; people used to pit dogs against each other, against bob cats, cockfighting was extremely popular. I just spent some time in Virginia City, Nevada which is a pretty darn interesting place. There are bars there that opened during the Civil War and have plenty of bullet holes in the ceiling and walls. There still are pictures of dog fights, C*ck fights, etc hanging in some of the places.
In defense of pit bulls, I did know one named "Bondo" who was the sweetest thing and I would trust her with anything. But I think alligators are safer to play with than most of the terrier breeds which were mostly developed as fighting dogs.

ps I think they have cockfights in San Jose on occasion. GR, you should check it out...I'd be curious to hear that in a trip report.
