OK I did make a mistake on the fact that that I only got charged the 10% on the food etc.. However I still dont feel really good about getting hit with 13% tax after getting promised a 10% discount from CRTs. Next time I spend my money I will be more careful. PS The rooms were great at SPL

The hotels all charge the 13% + 3% taxes nothing they can do about that, the question is did you get your 10% discount, if not contact the SL.

The 10% is a Costa Rican mandatory law.

Did you check to see if you got the discounted rates for CRT?

Time for a little music from........ Jeopardy. So GoKul did you or did you not have a discount on the rooms? In fact since you were so quick as to jump on CRT and SL please do tell the details here.

1) What rooms were you in?
2) How many nights?
3) Did you present your VIP card?
4) Have you called Bill or Johanna yet?

Hell this crack staff at CRT can do the math and tell you what your bill should have been sans F&B and other incidentals.

Will await your reply

GoKul,

Lets set the ground rules and then you can check your bill and see if there is a problem.

In Costa Rica, just like in the U.S. and other countries there are certain taxes and fees that are set by law. The owner of the restaurant, bar, hotel, etc. is required to collect these charges and remit them to the government. Failure to comply can lead to some severe consequences. So lets be Costa Rica specific.

The sales tax is 13% and is charged on almost everything you buy.

Restaurants and bars also charge a 10% service fee on food and beverage.

Hotels also are required to collect a 3% "bed tax" which is, on top of not, in addition to the sales tax. This results in an effective rate of 3.9%.

So to sum up restaurants and bars add 23%. (Sales tax + service charge)

Hotels add 16.39% to the base room rate. (Sales tax + Bed Tax)

The CRT discount percentage is whatever the establishment and Admin have agreed to. It has no effect on the various taxes and fees that the CR government mandates.

Check your bill and if there is a discrepancy from theses numbers contact the establishment and ask for a clarification.

I'm thinking now that maybe you read your bill incorrectly. The way SL works the discount into the bill is by lowering the nightly price of the room. You won't see an extra line item (i.e. Discount 10%). That may be why you think you didn't get the discount.

For example, if you stayed in a room for 10 nights which was $79 per night. And your bar/restaurant bill came to $100.00.

Your bill would look like this (exactly off a past bill):

Tarifa/Rate: $71.10
T.C./Exch Rate: 520.0

The rate is listed as $71.10, which is exactly $79 less 10% CRT discount. That's where you find the discount. The rate is quoted in dollars, but they give you the exchange rate so you can figure out what it would be in colones. In this case, it's $71.10 x 520 = 36,972¢ per night (includes discount):

The charges will be in colones:

Room 369,720.00 ($71.10x520x10)
Restaurant 52,000 ($100x520)

I.S./ Service Tax 10% 5,200 (52,000x10%)
I.C.T./Tourism Tax 3% 11,091.60 (369,720x3%)
I.V./Sales Tax 13% 54,823.60 (421,720x13%)
Total ¢ 492,835.20
Total $ 947.76

I think I was an accountant in a past life.

Hello GoKul,

Please call us toll free 1-800-291-2798 and identify yourself with your invoice number. We will be glad to discuss any problem you may have with your bill and make a correction if necessary. I do not know who you are and none of my staff has received an inquiry from you?

That would be a very unwise move on his part seeing how Littleshit would be unable to lobby for the decision being overturned in the court of public opinion

This is a good lesson for all of us. GET THE FACTS first and then come on here and share whatever is on your mind. That's just common sense which most of us exercise. :)

Berk.... exercising just enough common sense to stay out of jail and not pay cien
