I understand Mother's day (8/15) is one of the biggest holidays in CR and if you have a tica esposa or novia you'd better NOT forget to get her a gift. An amigo said he's actually expected to buy something for every mother in her family, is that true and do they place that same expectation upon Ticos or is this another case of a tica familia taking advantage of the gringo-novio's ignorance and "generosity"? :?

It is expected that anyone , be they Tico, Gringo, Martian, etc., who has a Tica madre, esposa, novia, significativa otro is expected to visit bearing flowers and gifts. Just take a look at the crowd at the local flower shop or at the street vendor florists who pop up and every intersection. All the hogars advertise Mothers day specials on home appliances.

This year and last year they take a double hit. Mothers Day has traditionally been celebrated on August 15. The previous administration changed that to the Monday following the 15th to give workers a long weekend. It did not go over well with the public so they simply celebrated on the 15th and took the following Monday off from work also. The legislators just passed on first reading a bill to restore it officially on August 15th. It was to late for for this year but should be in effect for next year.

So we should wish them a happy Mother's DAY on the 20th this year? ...And how do you say Happy Mother's Day in Spanish?

To play it safe say it on both the 15th & 20th

Maybe, " Día de la Madre Feliz"?

Ciao,
On the right side of your keyboard, hit the "num lock" key, then hit ALT 173 for the upside down exclamation point, or ALT 168 for upside down question mark.

¿Entiende? ¡Fantástico!

MG

yes it's a big holiday
moms get offended if they dont get anything (phone call is not enough)

this doesnt mean that you have a get a gift for every single mom in your family....
I only get a little something for my mom. like a perfume or tickets to a concert
i have seen hookers asking guys like todays mothers day.. you gotta give me something.... :?

Better start growing a spare arm and leg.

Mothers Day had been moved to a movable date by the Pacheco administration and was met with great resistance by the Ticos. The Arias administration restored it to its traditional date of August 15 a few years ago and it is a holiday.
