Costa Rica Among Countries Best To Control Corruption
Costa Rica is one of the countries in the world with a more advanced fight against corruption, according to a report by the Banco Mundial titled "El buen gobierno importa, 2007â€.
The study evaluated 212 countries on the grounds of ethics during the last decade, taking into account three areas considered a priority in the fight against corruption and strengthening democracy.
The countries were ranked with point system of 1 to 100.
The countries to head the list with success in controlling corruption on a world level are Canada (93.7), Chile (89.8 ), the United States (89.3), Uruguay (75.2) and Costa Rica (67). The Banco Mundial report gives Finland a score of 100, being the least corrupt country in the world.
The report indicates that Costa Rica has surpassed industrialized countries like Italy and Greece in combating corruption.
The most corrupt country in the world is Haiti with 2.4 points, while Venezuela at 12.6, leads the list of most corrupt countries in the Americas.
Daniel Kaufman, co-author of the report and considered one of the principal world experts on governing, said that good governing has a direct impact on the economy of a country, translating into more investment and a significant increase in earnings on capital.
Investigators say that bribes, on a world level, reach almost a billion dollars a year and that corruption falls disproportionately on the millions of people who live in extreme poverty.
