Hello Flanative, and welcome to costaricaticas!
Security: Remember that you'll be visiting a developing country, and many folks in Costa Rica have less money than you. Muggings/robberies are a possibility everywhere in the world, but in Costa Rica there's also what I call the "gouge the gringo" mentality: taxi drivers that refuse to use the meter and overcharge, strip clubs that pad your bill, restaurants/bars that pad your bill etc. Forewarned is forearmed however, and there's plenty of info here to help you avoid being robbed or cheated.
Is there anything to do when you're not screwing? Yes, although most of C.R.'s lure is in its outdoor activities. There are day trips that don't involve monkeys or zip-lines, including tours of coffee plantations, a beautiful waterfall park, a couple volcanoes, even hot springs where you can bathe in mineral waters.
In town, there are a gazillion bars. I know that the Sportsmen's Lodge and the Monkey Bar both have pool tables. Local bars offer fairly inexpensive beer and drinks. Food is cheap compared to U.S. prices.
Welcome again to the Forum. Do a little research, ask questions if you can't find the info you need.
Overall I would say, like that guy on "The Price is Right..."
"COME ON DOWN!" I guarantee you that you and your buddy will have the time of your lives!
