I would also recommend watching any movie from Pedro Almovador. Dark Habits, All About My Mother, Bad Education, Volver, Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down, Talk To Her, are just a few. His movies are funny, almost always include hookers, transexuals, murder, infedelity with interesting stories and great characters.

And one of my all time favorite movies, "Y Tu Mama Tambien."

Off topic: Someone PUH-LEEZ post some new pics in the V.I.P. section. 8)

Great choice TP.

I shall add a few of my fav.

Amores perros http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0245712/
Excellent story. The director went on to direct 21 Grams, and Babel.

The Motorcycle Diaries (Diarios de motocicleta)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0318462/
Beautiful scenaries. Based on Che's road trip when he's young.

Maria Full of Grace (Maria, llena eres de gracia )
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0390221/
A Colombiana rec this film to me aamof. It's about a Colombiana trying to make her way to US and all the things she ran into once there. Not a feel good movie.

Enjoy.

I just watched this flick tonight - thanks Traylor Park for finding it - absolutely loved it. It rang true, no? I kept thinking...these are our girls... these are our girls...don't you just love them? 30 euros for that sweetie?

Damn!

I loved that one scene of the girl walking the beam in the street - the female elan vital - beautiful. Freedom and addiction.

And it just goes to show - if your out with a chica and she hits the can - make sure she brushes before you DFK...

"Our Lady of the Assassins"

I just watched another great movie made in Medellin.

The stories main character is an older man who is a writer returning home to Medellinn after 30 years. He meets a young man who becomes his lover. The man has returned to die in his country and wants to retrace his childhood life one more time. As they travel through Medellin we witness all the violence that has affllicted the city. It is an indictment of the way of life in Medellin regarding religion, politics and those living in poverty who only make things worse for themselves.

It has a gay realtionship story but I don't consider it a gay movie because it deals with so many different issues that it transcends the gay love story. Which in itself is an allegory comparing the past to the present in many ways. This is definitiley a great film to watch!!

The following is a review of the movie by a Colombiano...

The movie is about lonelyness, about need of company when a gay man gets old, but most of all about friendship and love. Bad actors: YES, but everybody should understand that none of the characters are played by real actors. German Jaramillo(main role) is the writer of the original book and story in real life. Most of the killers in the movie are members or belong to real "Assasin gangs"in Medellin, so it is admirable that these guys were willing to act and participate in the movie. Believe it or not, the violence in Colombia is even worst.Reality goes beyond fantasy. The crude violence in this movie may seem unreal or exagerated by the characters but is just a distant approach to reality in Colombia. I'm originary from Colombia and let me asure everybody that this movie is just a brief show of the sad reality. For those who were not borned in Colombia, all the shots, deaths and blood may seem false but they are totally real.

Some of you may have reservations about booking a trip to Medellin after watching this movie. I walked through some of these neighborhoods on my first trip. If you take the cable car up the mountains you can see Santo Domingo. A very poor area in Medellin with a history of violence.

Phoenix Rising,
Did you not fall in love with Zulema (Micaela Nevarez) in Princesas? I swear if she didn't play a hooker in the movie I would marry her in a New York minute. She was so freakin' sweet! I'm in love!!

Yes TP...she was lovely...

And here's another working girl I fell in love with...Monica Bellucci in "Malena." Have you seen that one? An Italian film. Got the theme song on my IPOD.

Colombia packs heavy for Cannes
VARIETY - Friday 11 May, 2007 By Anne Marie de la Fuente

Stathoulopoulos' 'PVC-1' vying for Camera d'Or. Having seven pics in Cannes is a first for Colombia, where local film production has soared in recent years. Among the four Colombian pics in Cannes' world cinema showcase Tous les Cinemas du Monde, are last year's blockbuster "Sonar no cuesta nada" (A Ton of Luck) and comedy thriller "Bluff" by Felipe Martinez.

So my big brother tells me the other night at the bar that he knows I can take care of myself but he worries when I visit foreign countries. Then he tells me about ths phucked up movie he saw and it made him think about me on my trips. I asked him what the movie was called and he said..

Turistas!

Well I rented it tonight and I'll tell you what, don't see this movie if you plan on visiting Brazil anytime soon. I was in a very laid-back mood when I watched it and it was pretty disturbing!!

Here's the premise...

While traveling on vacation through the country of Northeastern of Brazil by bus, the American Alex Trubituan, his sister Bea Tribituan and their friend Amy Harrington meet the also foreigners Pru Stagler, Finn Davies and Liam Kuller after an accident with their bus. They follow a track through the woods and find a hidden paradisiacal beach. They decide to stay in the place drinking beer and dancing funk and parting with the locals and they meet the amicable Brazilian teenager Kiko. They are drugged with "Bom Dia, Cinderela" (translation: Good Morning, Cinderella - a trick used by smalltime crooks to steal naive people) and when they wake up, they are practically naked, with all their belongings, clothes, money, jewels, passports, backpacks etc. stolen. They walk to a small village trying to find a police station, they get into trouble with the dwellers and they are helped by their acquaintance Kiko, who leads them to his uncle's isolated well-equipped cabin in the woods to wait for the next bus two days later. Along the night, Kiko's "uncle" arrives with his friends and the group discloses the sinister intentions of the newcomers.

WARNING:
Watch at your own risk.

"The Rose Seller"

It's interesting because the cast is made up of almost all real street K*ds. The sad thing is I learned after watching it that many of the cast members are now dead.

Kinda like "City of God," another interesting look at Latin American slum life, but more direct and less budget.

Another one to watch,

La Mujer de Mi Hermano
(2005) R
When, after 10 years of marriage, Zoe (Barbara Mori) realizes she no longer feels any passion for her successful but vain husband, Ignacio (Christian Meier), her ardor finds another object in Ignacio's younger brother, Gonzalo (Manolo Cardona). This stylish exploration of infidelity pits brother against brother as all three points in the love triangle struggle to understand who they are, what they want from life and what they truly value.

I enjoyed that one as well.(only wish they would have given Gaby Espino a larger role in the movie as she is one hot mujer)
