you can start here http://www.costarica-embassy.org/consul ... efault.htm if you want to do it right.

I wouldn't advise any backhanded schemes or scams that one may say would expedite the process, especially if you want to work or invest here and have something you don't want to lose

I live here, and am going through the 'Rentista' residency process. I allegedly have my semi-final appointment with Immigration in August. I'm not counting on it. I've been here 2.5 years now.

I didn't bother trying to bring all my stuff with me. You mention cars, plural. I hope you're aware of the taxes you'll have to pay. I assume these cars must be valuable or you wouldn't bother bringing them down. The more valuable they are, the higher the taxes and fees. Be prepared.

There are a couple of books out there that might help, but their is varying opinion as to their worth or accuracy: Living Abroad in Costa Rica by Erin Van Rheehen and The New Golden Door to Retirement & Living in Costa Rica By Christopher Howard, the latter being like one long sales call for the rest of his services. Both have some useful information that is probably worth the money.

My best price to bring a small 20" container with a 2001 VW beetle, used hottub, elipitical exercise machine and a few other misc items was $6,800. Of which $1,650 was the price for the container from Tampa to Limon. All the rest was taxes, and special handling from Limon to Belen. I decided to pass.

Earlier I evaluated buying a 2001 Mercedes ML320 in the US at auction ($15,500) and shipping it to CR compared to the purchase of a 2001 Euro model ML320 for $29,000 from the local mercedes dealer. It would have cost me approx $32,000 to bring the same car from the US.

I now appreciate the absurdity of Costa Rica and understand more and more why people are choosing Panama. I may do the same in the near future.

Panama has it's plusses, but the only mongering I know of is in Panama City, which is not my cup of tea, weather wise. But look into the immigration rules there. I have heard from a pretty good source that in Panama you are now allowed to be there only 4 months a year without residency. Look before you leap.

Hi Bilko,

I just heard today that CR is planning to tighten up on the perpetual touristas. I hear that more than 180 days in CR during a year will require application for residence to get back in. That will change a lot, particularly if you discover this at immigration in CR. However, like much in CR, this may fortunately take years to implement.

That "word on the street" surfaces from time to time nothing new about that.

Might want to do some research before you make the plunge  .

VISAS- YOUR MONEY CAN STAY, BUT YOU GOTTA GO

While the residential real estate market in the U.S. continues to slow, the one ray of light has been the growth of the vacation and second home market. Here in Panama, the vacation and second home market is booming too, particularly in the beach areas and mountain communities. What better way to invest your money (or perhaps that IRA nest egg) than in buying a beachside condo or mountain retreat? Panama is the perfect place to buy a second home. What would you really rather do - spend those cold, northern winters with your toes in the sand and golfing in the cool mountain valleys or de-icing the car windows and putting on snow chains?

In the good old days, if you were from the U.S., Canada or Europe, a simple $5 tourist card and passport would give you a 90-day pass to paradise. And, if you really liked it here, you could have easily extended your tourist visa for another 90 days. That was more than enough time for all those snowbirds to escape the cold, dark winter months. Investing in that new condo would have meant no hassle enjoyment of your part time ticket to paradise!

Well that was the good old days when it was easy. On 25 May 2007, new tourist visa regulations came into effect that now limits your stay to 30 days. Sure, you can apply for a 60 day extension by going to the immigrations office. How hard can that be? Just go down to the office, stand in line, deal with an underpaid, under appreciated government clerk (think New York City Department of Motor Vehicles and by the way. how’s your Spanish?), give them your passport for two days and hope the immigrations office extends your visa another 60 days. Another option if you want to stay longer, is to just pack up the Bermuda shorts and flip flops and head out of the country for at least 72 hours so you can return to enjoy that $250,000 condo you just bought (and thought you would be spending the winter in).

To add confusion and uncertainty to the problem, the Panamanian immigrations department has been going out of its way to say that they plan to review each and every 60-day extension request. What does that mean? Well, here’s what the United States Embassy is saying about the situation:
“As of May 25, 2007, tourists are allowed to stay in Panama for 30 days. If they want to stay longer, an extension for up to 60 days (for a total of 90 days in country) from the Panamanian Migration Office is required. Please note that the approval of the extension falls under the Panamanian Immigration Office’s discretion”.
Clearly, the US Embassy is emphasizing that the extension of the visa is discretionary and not automatic. Something you might want to think about before plunking down a deposit on that pricy winter escape.

Add to that the recent results of world wide cost of living survey that shows Panama more expensive than Costa Rica and the hot humid climate and Panama seems less like paradise than has been touted

Thank for all the tips. So would it be cheaper for me to just my a nice 4wheel drive in CR rather then shipping it? Same thing for tools like air compressors saw's etc? I have a free place to stay in the mountains near SJ while i find some suitable land to buy and maybe build on. My friends co does most of the electrical contracts in CR. Like the 4 seasons, los suenos,, the airport hypermas's and even those big free energy windmills on the mountains near Arenal. He is a really good contact and friend whom i have known for over 20 years. I am sure he can help me with a lot after im there a while and he has some free time.

However Business is Business and im just reasearching the best possible way to protect my investments. Its scary just packing up and moving down but i have put it off too long. I dont want cuaght up in some sketchy land deal. I will be comming back to CR soon more of a business trip then anything else.

I am quite glad that I came down and that I live here. I came down with the idea of doing a 3 month 'test' and I ended up staying.

I strongly suggest you do a shorter term stay first before bringing more than you can take on an airplane. And I can not say this strongly enough: Do NOT be in a hurry to buy real estate or a business here! The situation here is full of nice little land mines just waiting for you to step on them so they can blow your foot off. There are more sharks in Real Estate down here than in the tanks at Marine World. Find a good lawyer, get to know him, then find another lawyer, get to know him, then hire them to check on each other. I am NOT joking here. Good luck.
