My buddy and I were just talking about the reason/lies I used with the wife/X-wife/girlfriend/(Even Mom) why I was going to SJO so much. I hate to lie first of all. In fact, I never lie to a wingman or a friend...it just sorta came natural when it came to the wife. Not proud of it, it just happened.

to summarize and keep this somewhat short I will give these in order the best I can. I would love to hear anyone else's comments as to why we NEED to go to Costa Rica. These were my reasons why I went to SJO.

1st time. Fishing with the boys.
2nd time. Caught alot of fish the first time but no Blue Marlin. Gotta go back.
3rd time. Still no Marlin. Gotta go back. Wife says BULLSHIT. you are going there to party!!!! (At least she is not stupid)
4th time. She said you better not tell me you are fishing. I said "NO, the superbowl is HUGE in Costa Rica. Everyone is going.
5th time. (Now separated). My buddy got comp'd the room and we need to use it before they take it away. (Anyone ever get a comp from Big John by the way?????)
6th thru 10 all blend together so these may be out of order. Now both my mother and the x-esposa is asking. Reasons were (Owner of the Hotel birthday party/My birthday/World Cup of soccer (CR vs. Germany)/Fishing again/and a friend of mine bought property down there, we are going to check on it.

Another time, I told my mother we were going to Panama to sail a boat up the coast to Costa Rica. This was a good one since NO CELL PHONES WORK on the ocean. (That one, I was in Colombia for 5 days and wasn't sure if the cell phone worked there). I didn't want to make Ma worry saying I was in Bogota.


Anyway, question at hand is: Anyone else have some good stories they had to sell to the wife/girlfriend/mother/etc...as to why you NEEDED to go away with the boys to Costa Rica? Now that I am runnin' solo again, I just may need a couple fresh ideas if I decide to start datin' a gringa some day. Tell me your lies!!!

My personal favorite is immersion in a Spanish Language School. Course, gotta actually learn some Spanish while your gone to get away with it

Work, I have a big client down there...

Unfortunately my "work" is drying up... I've upgraded their systems so many times, I think I've built them a sentient computer system...

I already speak Spanish but I've been going on the premise that I'm going to be speaking spanish 100% of the time, which is only half-true. Besides that, another half-truth that I am spouting out are that I am going for the ecotourism (rafting, canopy tours, surfing, etc). I will probably get around to half of those things though, I am not going to be mongering the whole time... at least that's what I tell myself for the time being!

Never underestimate the power of religion. About 5 years ago, a buddy and I said that we were going down to build a church. On the way to Jaco we had the cab driver stop at every church we saw so we could take numerous pictures. I can't tell you how much mileage we've gotten out of these pictures.

I just wave bye and tell them they can find out what I do when they pay for my ticket and hotel.

With that said, my Mom suspects some of my bad habits. She's like the military and has a firm Don't ask, don't tell policy.

San Jose is smack dab in the middle of CR, so on any given day you can take an eco tour to the four corners of the country. One or two of those day trips and a digital camera will produce enough photos to convince anyone that you sent your whole time in the great outdoors.

All this talk about pictures reminds me of a conversation I had with someone when I first went down there...I was talking to someone about setting up some business that would take a picture of a person and superimpose it on a fishing charter posing with different types of a fish. Talk about a gold mine. Never leave the Delrey and bring home pic's of you holding a sailfish..

I have taken to visiting my brother in Los Angeles, my sister in Houston or my cousin in Chicago a great deal, especially when I am in Costa Rica. Of course, this does not work unless you are divorced. I don't think that I could have gotten away with it while I was married.

work for me, get a little flak from the wife, because I have usually a 4 hour meeting, but spend 10 days there. Tell her I need my own time....not a problem with her, but once her gringa friends get going that can't believe it, why does she let me go yada, yada, yada. Basically, I really don't give a rats ass, I won't be living a long life, but want to have a good life

OMG THAT'S FUNNY!!!

I knew a guy who told his wife that he had "missed a few birds" in Costa Rica and had to go back. They were both avid bird watchers so it made sense to me; of course, this is before I ever went there. But she knew why he was going back without her and she said "I am going to kill whoever told him about that place.

I hope he found what he was looking for at the Del Rey!
