On my last trip, my lady friend (amiga/novia/?) and I were given a tour of the towns of Heredia, Santa Bárbara, Santo Domingo, Barva and San Joaquín de Flores. A tico journalist amigo took it upon himself to do this. She lives in Heredia, so she was very familiar with all of these places.

Anyhow, the point of this post is a very good seafood restaurant we ate in that evening. This info is from the meal receipt so it should be accurate.

El Banco De Los Mariscos
Barco De Santa Barbara S,A.
Santa Barbara De Heredia

Telefono: (506) 269-9090

I live in an area of the U.S. that gets good fresh seafood. This restaurant was very good! It blows Restaurante Princessa Marina out of the water for quality IMHO. Price for three with ceviche, main course and beers was 23,554.50 colones.

We arrived somewhat early in the evening and the restaurante was nearly empty. I would say it could seat approximately 100. Service was very good to excellent. When we finished, nearly every table was occupied. Parking was ample and supervised/monitored.

This is kind of far from the gulch. If you're going in that direction or already near there, you should give this place a try.

Hey Sailor, good to hear from you. Knowing you're so close to fresh seafood at home the place must be good, hope to check it out next trip. Princessa Marina is a bargain but more of a fast/cheap seafood place. Would you say Santa Barbara is 20 minutes from the gulch? (depending on traffic of course)

Paco, after consulting my lady friend, the restaurante may be 30 +/- minutos from the gulch depending on traffic. YMMV. 8)

I have eaten there 2 or 3 times. Beautiful setting with good food.

Much better than princesa marina which is just a fair restaurant with good prices.

finally got out there last friday
basically, very good food in a basic patio furniture setting
most fish dishes were $7-9, lobster was $16, my mistake was ordering lobster salad, which is rather bland, i think lobster in garlic sauce would have been much better
kind of like No Name in Boston, if that means something to people

another mistake was heading there on a payday Friday, when every tico was on the road, with a few accidents due to rain, or just everyday tico driving.
started from Courtyard, driver did not know to take the backroad to the airport, then to Santa Barbara,
So from Escazu to the outskirts of SJ was about 1 hour, another hour to make it the big road for the airport, and another 20min to Banco

so main item, don't bother for a long taxi trip on payday fridays
