So, what was going on yesterday, June 22? I walked out of the HDR at about 3:30PM. I wasn't paying much atttention as I walked across the street to the Del Mar to get my long time favorita. She was ordering some food. As I walked across the street, I saw many police and media types. In fact, since I wasn't paying attention I walked right in front of a cameraman who was filming me. So, if this event shows up on the news, I'm the gringo with the yellow shirt on. haha.

Rumor has it (aka..word on the street), is that some gringo OD'd in his room. Allegedly he was there for 3 days!! And, also that another immigration raid was on the agenda. So, anyone got any intel? I got this story from a Cubana chica who was standing outside.

Speaking of immigration, I am now in Jaco and I see that the BB is now checking cedulas. Damn, has Jaco changed in the 8 months since I have been here last.

I watched all the excitement at the Del Rey while sitting on the balcony of the NYB yesterday afternoon. I was told this morning that a 37 year old gringo was found dead in his room.......an apparent OD on coke.

OK...so this is my zany take on this...excuse if I come off insensitive.

This happens to probably hundreds of addicts and abusers in the Americas every day. Isnt it interesting that media and "officials" make a special parade out of this happening to a (assumption) white male gringo in the infamous Hotel Delrey? Like no one knows gringos have these issues also?

Or perhaps the story is really about how bad service is at the Delrey if someone lay dead 2-3 days without room service or security checking on them?

Sad crazy world sometimes.

The media down here may be taking their cue from the US media... all sensationalism, all the time. Fox 'news' spent 4x more time on Anna Nicole Smith than the war in Iraq.

When I heard the story last night, my reaction was: I'm surprised it (overdoses, deaths in room, etc.) doesn't happen more often. A friend said it probably DOES happen quite often but the Del Rey is able to keep it quiet. For whatever reason, the press got wind of this and voila! Instant circus.

Unfortunate:

Unfortunate for the gentleman my sympathy to his family and friends. He should've spent his money getting blown and not doing below. I find the comment "Or perhaps the story is really about how bad service is at the Delrey if someone lay dead 2-3 days without room service or security checking on them?" Interesting. The problem I have when I am stayed there is the staff constantly bang on my door from about eight o'clock in the morning till about seven o'clock at night. Wanting to clean the room, changed the drapes, fill the minibar and check and see if all the above was done.

Yeah ... the sad thing is he was wasting his vacation away on coke. If this guy died with a hot chica ridin' his dink , then he becomes a legend ... and thats the way alot of dudes want to go out. Obviously he had the "do not disturb" sign on his door and the maids DID provide good service by honoring it. The mistakes he made were doing coke & not having a friend that would check on him.

Very sad indeed. Think I'll put on a little Jackson Brown and listen to 'Cocaine running all around my brain' lyrics appear to fit this unfortunate soul.

In all fairness Shawn...

A lot of legends have gone out with coke runnin' in their veins. And, it wouldn't be so surprising to me to find out that he was in the act of sex, foreplay, whatever, upon death. I mean...coke and sex can mix well. If his idea of a good vacation was to be mixed up in Colombian coke and beautiful women...well...

I'm certainly not justifying the use of coke or trying to misrepresent its dangers. I just think that this OD guy might have gone out in a pretty good time in his mind. It might not be how you or I would like to go, but I don't think it's fair to be negative or harsh towards this fellow.

And, lot's of guys make solo voyages to CR. Hell, I'm doin' it in July.

In all fairness CashConn... Are you kidding me? Yeah I'm sure it was a blast right up until his heart stopped and maybe his brain hemorrhaged. 35 A year old guy's life is over because he was a moron that took it too far, and all those other "legends" that OD'd early in life are dead morons too.

Well Paco...

As mentioned, some guys dream about going out with a chick banging his brains out. Well, is the cause of death here gonna be the chick's sweet ass or some other ailment...I dunno, maybe heart failure.

I'm not saying this dude wanted to die at an early 35. He probably didn't want to die with someone else cleaning the shit out of his diapers either.

Basically, it was the whole "moron" / negative perspective that I feel is unfair. And, who knows what kind of partying he did. Maybe it was one line and done. He took it too far cause he's dead. But, how many times have you or anyone pushed it in life?

And just think about all that money he wasted on Coke, he could have really had a good time at ZB or NF or Idem, and then if his heart stopped he would have at least had a smile on his face.

Since we all love rumours, I heard from a Del Rey employee that the guy was 58 and died from too much viagra. I do NOT vouch for this story, but as long as we are sharing rumours, what the Hell.
