if you want to score with non-pros it's all about your game. Obviously if you know Spanish it is a big plus but if you just know enough it's still pretty easy. The thing is this, if you are over 50 and you go to la calle la amargura, well it's gonna be pretty hard to score with a 20 year old college student. But seriously, its all about you having fun and trying to communicate in a fun way whether you speak spanish or not. Anyway, it is a lot easier to pick up chicks here then in the states. Especially if you are a gringo. Plus, a lot of non-pros know enough English to communicate. Here is a list to help you out but keep in mind that this list is more for people age 20-40 years old.

Jaco Beach: El CEntral is a disco that is happening late at night. Lots of working girls from the Beatle Bar go there once it is close and they will go home w/ you for free and a lot of regular girls as well.

San Jose: Wont bother to list Castro but here are some places

Cafe 83: A very nice place in San Pedro with a good age variety. they have a DJ and they play electronic music there and even if it is not your type of music, it is tolerable.

K&S its a microbrewery at Plaza Crystal close to San Pedro lots of regular girls there with a live band

El Pueblo obviously but I found it more of a challenge to pick up girls there.

Chaplin Pub in San Pedro but only during the weekdays

Nashville Sur next to the Aurora has regular girls that vary from 20 to 60 years old. However, you wont find girls there late at night unless they have a date.

Avenida Central of course, here is a pretty easy way to initiate conversation, go make a phone call at a public booth. Always a ligne, have a phone card ready and a phone number to call. make a phone call and ask the girl to help you cause you dont know how to use it. Go, "por favor puedes me ayudar con el telefono?" while showing her the card. The rest is up to you and u can ask her out for a cup of coffee.

Elvis, a decent bar with karaoke which is behind the bus stop for Limon

Hope this helps and here is a line to remember, "mi amor eres muy preciosa", hand her flower

Kotigre...are there ANY bars/clubs in San Jose that have live rock & roll
bands? I actually saw one at the Key Largo one time about eight months
ago, but never saw them again. El Pueblo just has latina/dance/rap/hip
hop music. The latina music is good, but the other music is crap.
There are quite a few great latino rock bands, from Mexico, Spain,
Argentina, Chile, Colombia and elsewhere, and San Jose does have a
good rock radio station. I actually heard a good rock band in Jaco about
two years ago. They were playing at Riosis (formerly Munchies). They
did an awesome cover of Jimi Hendrix's 'All Along the Watchtower'. Any
clubs with live rock in San Jose?

Kotigre,
Welcome to the board! I see that you joined way back on 4/30 but have been keeping a fairly low profile up until today. It is always great to have a knowledgeable guy who is HQ'd in the thick of the action. Keep up the good posts.

Thanks for the welcome. I think that one of these nights I need to go to the DR and meet some of my fellow mongers. As for the live rock n roll, that's a pretty tough one. Especially if you are looking for a gringo place without having to go to the Key Largo.
From the top of my head, Bar la Salamandra in Tibas which is a tico place, the Jazz Cafe which is a very nice place in San Pedro sometimes has rock n roll band as well as K&S in plaza Crystal. Tonight, there is this rock n roll guy that's gonna be playing at planet mall in the Mall San Pedro but it's more of a concert and he sings in spanish. I'll see if I can find more places but in the meanwhile, this link should help with places to go. http://www.clubzone.com/company/index.asp?state_prov=40

By the way you guys usually meet everyday at the DR for happy hours?

Kotigre...thanks, I'll check out the places you mentioned. I have heard
of the place you mentioned in Tibas. I also heard there was a club in Heredia
that had live rock & roll bands. Don't misunderstand me...I don't care if
they sing in Espanol or English, just as long as it's rock. As I said in my
previous post, there are quite a few great Latino rock bands in the world.
One of these days, I'll get around to creating the CD(s) I promised about a
year ago.

The rock band I saw at the Key Largo in November did an awesome cover of
a Led Zeppelin song. I think it was either 'Rock & Roll' or 'Stairway to
Heaven'. I must have been about the only person in the place to appreciate it.
My Tica novia certainly wasn't impressed.

Kotigre...a lot of days you can meet up with LVBob who lives here and various CRT visitors most every week at the Blue Marlin happy hour (not that they have happy hour specials or anything). I live in Los Yoses also...so maybe we are neighbors :?

SOunds like you know the town well...we'll have to meet and compare notes. Hope to meet you soon (maybe I already know you  )

I concur that Jazz Cafe seems to be slanting more and more towards rock and harder music than their former jazz routine. Probably due to the university neighborhood and that markets preferences. It is a nice date place to go.

meeting up one of these day sounds good but it aint gonna be tonight. At work right now with maybe 2 hours of sleep. Started at Chaplins' pub next to the KFC in San Pedro. A decent crowd but bot enough action for me and just wasn't in the mood to hit on any girls even though they were a lot of young college girls there. Probably because there is a university right in front of the place. Ended up at the NYB around 11:30pm left some of my people there and went to the BM to see if any CRTs were there but it was so packed there that I just did the rounds. Walked through the gauntlet, got gropped a few times and went back to the NYB. Closed the NYB down and headed to La Luncheria which unfortunately is open til 6am. La Luncheria is a good place to pick non-pros and pros. bar and karaoke downstairs and dance club upstairs and it was crawling with hotties. I mean non-pros that varied from 5-9. Also, usually around 3am lots of the dancers from the Flamingo(owned and operated by the guy who owns the pink panther) and if you buy them a few drinks and make them laugh, you can take them home for free or a $30-$60 and they are pretty hot. Nice thing is that the drinks there are cheap. DOnt worry about finding them. If you are gringo the pros will find you and dont ask about any of the girls there how much. If she is a pro, she will let you know.

Hey Kotigre,

I'd be interested in knowing where La Luncheria is located. I haven't run across that one.

Thanks,

mexpat

hi mexpat,

here are the directions to la loncheria: San Jose Centro. por la chavelona avenida san martin. Most cab drivers know the place so you shouldnt have any problems finding the place. You will need to know a little Spanish at that place since it is a local place but if you dont, use your charm and you'll be ok. Dead tired because of last night and still at work for another 20 minutes. Since I like punishment, gonna go meet delreydave at the NYB for that famous one beer. Also need to do some damage control with Neiling since she saw me last night with that half chinese/half tica girl last night. If you are in San Jose tonight meet us there around 10:30pm. If not let me know next time you are in town and I'll show the tico side of Costa Rica. Wish me luck.
