Today I go to check out of my room at the DelRey and look over the bill. In the states, I'd usually just give my credit card and not even look. But I feel I have to in CR. So I ask the BEAUTIFUL little chica behind the desk to explain it to me. Well, there are about 6 or 7 chica fees on my bill. Hmmm. I KNOW I paid cash every single time I took a girl and did not charge any of them. As a matter of fact, I even gave the security guard a tip a few times. I know the main guy from several other trips and he's always very cool with me. Anyways, she calls him over and it turns out that "he thought it was all propina". Im saying that I gave 10k colones. 5k for the chica fee and 5k for a tip. This guy thought it was all for him! I mean, I'm stupid but Im not dumb.

Moral of the Story - Check your bill very closely on check-out. Especially when out of the country!

he brought over the money and payed it to the front desk. i explained that half of it was for chica fees and half for propina. she looked at me and smiled and said "they always think it is for them" and smiled. (damn, she's cute)

I am just curious why you think it is necessary or advicable to tip desk clerks and security. It seems to have resulted in negative behavior on the part of the clerk and it would not be common practice to do it in the states, so why do it in CR? :?:

Talk about overtipping... :? :?: :?

I've never tipped somebody just for being there. If he helped me with my bags or called me a taxi, then a 1k tip at most.

Haha you tipped a security guard 10$? I mean, whats the point. Maybe if he was letting me up the elevator without the chica fee Id slip him the odd 5k, for every other time or whatever, but I dont get your principle.

Ive never tipped 10$ to anyone for anything.

the reason i gave him a tip is 2-fold. first, the last time i was in san jose, this particular security guard helped me with something major. my friend had a big problem and he helped me with it. second, i go by the philosophy that if you take care of people, they will take care of you. it is worth my piece of mind that i know a few people that "have my back" when alone in a foreign country. YES, i know this is costa rica and i will be forgotten as soon as i walk away from the desk. BUT, you never know.

With all due respect,I think I have to side with the security guard on this one. If you have tipped him before, and don't tell him "this time is different and split between you and the chica fees ",how was he supposed to know? Since I have never stayed there I don't know for sure, but I would venture to say that it is a RARE occasion that someone pays the chica fee in cash as opposed to putting it on the room charges. Next trip stay at the SL or the Presidente and don't worry about fees.

No offense taken, VB. I always pay in cash just for this reason. I don't want any surprises on the final bill. When I had tipped him before it was the same deal. Some for the chica fee and some for propina. Between you and I, I think he understood very well what was intended.
