I'm going to Costa Rica for the first time. I'm thinking about staying at a low rent hotel to save on money. I'll be staying for about 10 nights. If I stay in a cheap hotel it would cost 150-200 for my trip, but if I stay in a decent hotel like Castillo, it would cost me 500. However, I'm concerned of security at these low rent places since they usually don't have a safety box. I think I would sometimes leave my camera in the room. I don't want it stolen since it cost me $440, although its a lot cheaper now. I'm also concerned about cash and etc. I would probably have to take money at the atm everyday and take out the money I'm going to use for each day rather than carry a huge sum of money with me each day. I don't plan to bring a woman in my room. I would rather be safe and go to IDEM, ZB, NF, or other houses.
Do any of you guys have any suggestions?

No. I probably go see what Del Ray offers or Key Largo. However, I don't plan to take them back to the hotel room. I plan on just using massage parlors.

Well I think you may change your mind when you get there.

Terminator,
You are better off spending $300 per day.
3 or 4 MP girls a day or
one Delrey chica $70, no more, no money until sexo finished and 2 MP chicas aday
Presidente Hotel $64 and change aday with CRT or any corp. discount.
includes a very decent buffet breakfast, digital safe in room; leaves you $235 a day for drinks, food and girls.

I rather save the extra hotel money and spend it on a session at ZB. Castillo's rate is about 50. It's tempting since its close to all the action.

Guys have been staying at SL, Hotel Castillo and now La Amistad and do not remember a single report of a street robbery.

Why would you make a comment like that?

I have stayed in low end places around the world and yet to get robbed in the Hotel. Low end place of choice is Nuevo Johnson where many memebers her have stayed at $15. There are some nicer options in the $20 to $30 range including several apartments . I usually stay at Vista Linda Apartments for about $140 per week. It is quite decent and rooms have safes. It is a littel removed from downtown but bus stops right in front and runs for about $0.25 to town heart of town and back, about a 15 minute ride.rbc100

I think there are a number of factors that require analysis before staying in a low rent hotel such as security of the room, area, type of guests and whether you might possibly be victimized because you appear very different from the other guests and therefore might be considered to be someone hiding money. The other issue is what would be the impact from a robbery or theft, and finally could this situation be avoided by staying at a nicer hotel like the Castillo. One probably impact would be or could be the loss of your passport, which would be followed by several trips to the embassy and calls home, plus a hefty replacement fee.

As a first timer, who can I assume speaks little or no Spanish? You might well be better off, paying a little extra money for the security provided by a better establishment. Of course, just my opinion…..

You're a VIP and at the Castillo the CRT discount room rate for a standard room is 34 bucks cash including tax and breakfast. That's $340 for a 10 night stay. Safe, secure, it's is my hotel of choice when in SJO.

If you stay at a low rent place like the Hotel Johnson I think you are asking to be ripped off as lond as you plan on being there. If you can't afford 340 bucks you might want to wait till you save up enough cash.

Just a thought.

Berk.....

DEE.... didn't see your post. sorry.

ID..... I don't think Jimmydr was talking about the Castillo, SL, etc.. I think he was referring to the low end places like Hotel Johnson and the like.
