My apologies if this has been posted before, I couldn't find what I was looking for under the search function.

I am wondering if anyone here has spent time in Tijuana and San Jose and could discuss the differences beween the cities in terms of things to do (not mongering related), atmosphere, etc.

I am thinking of heading to CR this month for 4-5 days but am worried that I will have nothing to do.

I don't want to monger 24 hours a day and I am finding very little of interest in the guidebooks. The K and S Brewery is the only thing I have seen printed that really sounds like a good time.

I enjoy the mongering in TJ but HATE spending time there. I haven't heard great things about the city of San Jose and don't feel it's worth while to make a trip if its just a smaller verson of TJ. I don't need to be in a paradise, or even an attractive surrounding, but I need some non-mongering activities to keep me busy for 3-4 days. I do not care to leave the city to take eco-tours. I know you can see everything TJ has to offer in a day.

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Just to be clear, I am not looking for specific suggestions on things to do, (though they are certainly welcome but I know those posts exist elsewhere), I was just wonding if in general people beleive there is enough non-mongering things to do to keep you busy and reasonably entertained for a few days if you do not have an eco-tourism agenda.

Spangler, there is a ton of things to do and see. When you get tired of one city, try another city. You got the Pacific side and the Carribean side of the country. Dive in and try it. Get a memnership to CRT, the savings you receive will pay for the membership and thensome. Keep an eye out for a cheap fare. I am am flying in August for $330 w/tax from LAX.

Spangler, I think you will find San Jose immensly better for both mongering and tourism. There is not a lot to do in San Jose proper and it is not a tourist type city but here are many great day trips from San Jose you can book at tour desks of most hotels. Costa Rica is one of the hottest tourist destinations in this continent and one of the most beautuiful coutries I have visited including many aprts of the world. That is one of the big plusses that turned me on to CR in the first place. Since I have seen much of the country after over twenty trips I now tend to focus more on mongering.rbc100

TJ is a town full of hookers. It is not a mecca for tourists. SJO is a city full of hookers in the gluch area AND a tourist mecca. The difference is like night and day.

I have mongered in TJ about 30 times. I never fly from Chicago to just go to TJ. I ususally spend most of my time in Rosarito or San Diego which are beautiful places. San Jose has beautiful places which an hour or so ride too.

My preference for San Jose is because the service that the girls provide at the massage parlors versus the 20 minute session that you get in TJ when the "talachero" starts knocking on your door.

In addition, in San Jose you do not have to worry about being extorted by the local police and paying a bribe like is the case in TJ. Remember that TJ is a border city and will always have these problems.

I still get to TJ quite a bit since it's a cheap non-stop flight from Chicago to San Diego! I love all latinas.

Here's my opinion: TJ is like Motel 6...San Jose is like the Four Seasons. In my opinion TJ is a cesspool of filth.

Thanks for all the replies. I am feeling better now about making a trip to SJO.

I agree TJ is a cesspool of filth, but I was begining to get the impression that SJO might be the same way. If it is I see no point in spending the extra money to go, when I could hit the cesspool I am already very well familiat with for much less.

I would really like to monger somewhere that was actually a pleasant place to be.

Search this site as well as the internet and you can fill your vacation with a ton of fun things to do in Costa Rica. It takes several trips (if they are short / a week or so) to see and do it all. You won't regret it. If your like most of us here you will be booking your next trip as soon as you get home. PURA VIDA

Hi Spangler
I live in San Diego for over 30 yrs, I go to TJ about twice or 3 times a month; they are completely diff. animals ( I love some of the latina flair).
Have been to C-R 4 times and olny stay in San Jose arriving and departing
day. I prefer S-J it's safer (most areas), very different restaurants, nice locations nice latinas. I spend some time in Manuel-Antonio area, Arenal
both easy to reach; these places are very laid back.
Going back to C-R in Aug or Sept. Hope you have a nice trip.

I can fly to San Diego on a Saturday 7AM flight from Chicago that lands at 9AM in San Diego which has a great climate and is truly one of the most beautiful cities in the US. I can usually fly for about $175 round-trip with a week's advanced purchase. I then can enjoy sweet Mexican panocha by 10AM I love Mexican panocha! I can monger in TJ until Sunday afternoon for $60 per session and then get back to the San Diego Airport for a flight back to Chicago.

In all, plenty of Mexican panocha for a weekend without much detailed planning required. Zero vacation days burned for a party weekend.

Try doing a weekend like this to San Jose and compare time off of work and total cost!

Greetings:

From one of the Casino Parking lots, I forget which one, you can see a volcano belch and snort at the natives. There are 5 of them active in Costa Rica.

You could go to Del Rey and watch some of us fat old men belch and snort at the women. There are hundreds of us, maybe thousands active in Costa Rica.

There is lots to do. It is the capital city of the most educated, wealthy countries South of the USA. 96% literacy, more teachers than cops, and this is the first country in the world to constitutionally disband their army. It took place 80 some years ago.

But, while it isn't 3rd world in most places, it definately isn't 1st world either. Roads are bad, but the people are something else.

Have a great time.

Regards,
-Wmax2
