I was at the del ray tues night. struck up a conversation with a del ray girl. bought her a drink or two. after a while I decided I could do better. told her another time. at that point she requested a propina for "her time" with me at the bar. of course i say no way. I had bought three drinks for her and she was not getting any better looking. my buddy was dancing at the key largo and a chica asked him for propina for dancing. he said vamos. what is going on here?

The way I look at it, she is in a sales position and assumes the associated risks. In the business world, if the salesperson fails to make the sale, it's not as though the potential client is still obligated to provide compensation.

You did the right thing - especially since you had already bought her three drinks. Don't let them take you for suckers - JUST SAY NO!

Obviously X amount of guys pony up a propina for time, so they might as well ask. I always reply I am not a tourist and they never get mad. Probably letting them know you are a veteran is a good idea. Even if it is your first hour in SJO, never tell them you are on your first trip. It is like jumping in the shark tank with an open wound.

BK.... I don't know how many newbies I have talked to over the last couple of years in the Dr and the one thing i always tell them is never admit it's your first time here. The shark tank thing is right on.

DC.... the chica is trying to make a buck any way possible. I cannot blame them for asking. She, though, hung with you thinking she was gonna get lucky. The fact that you bought her a drink or 2 is meaningless to her. She didn't show up to the "party" to drink. She showed up to take some cash home.

I guess she had been successful with that request before. It has been stated many times that we allow the girls to become condition at asking a certain price and now tips for talking to us. Next we will start get billed for walking into to the DR to supplement the chicas income on a bad night.

Times a changing guy and not for the good either.

Maybe its just me...but I have always felt guilty taking up a lot of a P4P girls time at any of these establishments with no intention of going with with them or paying anything near "cien".

I just had this discussion tonight with a friend here in Panama. We were sitting at Habanos over a couple drinks and he was chatting a long time with a Colombiana we have met before. She was being very nice, polite, but every once in a while hinting if either of us was interested in "partying" with her. When she went to talk to a girlfriend nearby, my buddy says he is not interested in her...but just loves to go there to flirt and tease. I told him they were here to flirt and PLEASE...for enough money to survive the day. That this is their job. He said..."well, they'll leave when they want to...are big girls and can make their own decisions". While I understood his point...I was still uncomfortable with her there...me knowing she was going to get nothing for it.

Some of these girls may be hard core pros...and this is just a big game for all of us. But I still believe in the golden rule...treat others as you would be treated. I have talked at length with many pros, both in CR and Panama...but I have early on made it clear I was or was not interested in doing anything with them tonight. Most of them appreciate that...and many times they stick around because you have respected them. I have been in sale all my life...and the suckiest times have been when you are going through a pitch or the rituals with people who are PRETENDING to be interested...sometimes not even qualified...and wasting a lot of time and energy. Personally I dont think we should do that with these independent girls at these places. Look, flirt, and be friendly...but dont waste their time or lead them on. If we are interested or using their services...they deserve our respect as well.

OH...and I have tipped many times for a pleasant conversation in a strip club or the Delrey or Key Largo without having tasted their wares. I would rather do that than buy them the most expensive drinks in town that they get no cut from (strip clubs aside). I think we should care that they have food and milk for their Babi*s...and healthy in the future should we decide we DO want their services and time...

Good post, Tman. If I'm not interested in the chica, I tell her up front to not waste her time with me, but if she WANTS to sit and talk, she's welcome to.

GringoM...I think the point is more...why would you take a "salesperson" out for dinner and drinks if you were not going to buy their product? And if the salesperson knew you werent going to buy...why would they go with you in the first place?

This is the kind of bad attitude that many have developed. If they can't recognize and appreciate us buying them drinks then we should stop buying them ... Maybe after sex , if everything went well they can have a couple of free drinks in lieu of a propina. Hows that sound? Granted , we should not lie to them and lead them on about doing business if we have no intention, but there is a feeling out process most of us want to go through before committing to anything. This is FREE time and we owe them nothing for it. Not drinks or tips or taxi money... nothing.
