Will it look like a regular area code (looking like New Brunswick) or will it have added digits that indicate that a country code is involved?

I've gotten calls from my novia in CR and if she uses a calling card, I get either unavailable or some weird area code 223-xxx-xxxx. I've never seen 506 if she's using a calling card.

If she doesn't use a calling card, but calls from her parents house, it looks like 506-xxx-xxxx. Looks like somebody calling from 506 area code, not country code.

It may depend on the telephone provider in the US whether it shows up on the caller ID as unavailable or whatever.

VOIP is far from foolproof

ID, the article says "those getting the call thought that they originated in Washington, D.C., at the 202 area code" not that he (Jaime Ligator) was traced through that number.
I wouldn't be surprised if the right authorities could trace your location even with a VOID, but when you call, the number that shows up is your own number, not matter where you're calling from, because that's the one programmed into the phone adapter.
To be in the safe side, I'd say that at least Vonage is foolproof as long as you don't use it for crimminal activities, and I think that fooling around is not a crimminal act....yet!

I only used that example to show that a previous post stating that VOIP showed up as scrambled number that were not traceable. The point was that was not the case of all VOIP services as the original poster indicated and therefore was not "foolproof".

Vonage certainly can be traced back by law enforcement to the person who has that phone number very easily. I certainly was not advocating that it be used for criminal activities unless one considers cheating on their spouse as a crime.

Well this topic has already been beat to death but take it from someone that has family in CR and gets calls from CR everyday they will occasionally show up on ID. Mostly it shows as unavaiable but I called back to the states last night from my hotel and the number came up on the caller ID.
Spanky has the best idea. Use a calling card and just say it was routed through costa rica. Some internet based phone companies could be routed through anywhere. There are 100's of interenet phone card companies online. Call quality is average to poor but its cheap.
I am in CR now and would let you use my softphone but it would show up as a Florida area code and if you have a bored woman sitting by the internet it could bite you in the ass. Good luck .

I'm back in Toledo, and I just hope she is so horny that the topic does
not come up. If it does, I plan on saying, "I wonder where the hell
area code 506 is." A problem is that she does know I like to take trips
to Latin America, especially Costa Rica. But last fall she became
suspicious about these trips, so I have tried to hide them since then.

I will report back if anyone is interested. Guys, I don't blame anyone
for any advice, no matter what happens.

I dont even think most people are aware that mongering takes place in Costa Rica. So her first thought wouldnt be you are mongering if she finds out. The only thing is, if she catches you in the lie, she's going to wonder why you lied. So just in case she finds out, you'll need to have a plausible story. Maybe you're buying investment property or something business related on the beach.

I just read that CR has the greatest amount of gringos per capita than any other country in the world besides the USA itself. So there have to be other reasons to come here.

Tell her you're some kind of contractor or salesman, making periodic trips for your job.

I've been to Latin America a few times, and my mother still thinks I'm a virgin (no luck with Gringas here).

using the calling card with a cellular phone or from a pay phone will show the caller ID 50% of the time and the other 50% not. Seems like the first call is usually unidentified but the 2nd call back is.

Not sure about VOIP from CR but from the US, calling myself, it is like 1234567890. I do not have a call in plan. Perhaps with a call in plan is will show you base #. Test, test and test to verify.

But ya know what, unless plausible denial is a big issue and you are keeping secrets and lies, WTF, just call and let her deal with it??? or not.

Anyway, I wish you luck.

Just my two cents

My t-Mobile cell works very well in CR. When I call home my number does not accept anonomous calls. Therefore it asks me to enter the number I am calling from. I enter my cell phone number which is the same area code as my home number. I have also entered other numbers and area codes. It does not screen, identify or care what number I put in, as long as I put in ten digits.

Good luck

One option might be "caller ID Spoofing" you can google that term and there are various companies that sell the cards. Basically the way it works is you call there number and receive a recording that asks you to input the number you want to call....

Then you are asked to input the number you wish to have displayed on the recipients caller ID It's pretty affordable and you can use any number you wish.

THERE'S ALWAYS: CALLWAVE.COM...

You can make calls from your computer, once it's set up, and it looks like you're calling from your cell phone. Not only that, BUT it goes against your cell phone minutes... I'm not quite sure how they do that, but it means I can make calls from anywhere in the world, and as long as I'm calling "in-network," which most of my calls are, they're free...

A few years ago my gringa bit*h wanted me to call her when I went on a "business trip to Saint Louis".
I told her I do not call home on business trips and she got pissed and broke off a perfectly awful relationship.

Now thats what I'm talkin bout ! BALLS.

I too told my Gringa bitch I could not call home on my last trip.(business)
She sent me an email stating " I don't think were a good match" .
No Shite! Your a woman & I'm a man with his balls firmly attached.
Thats never gonna work for long (the way I like it!).
It hurt extra bad because I read the email at the Sportsman's with a 24 year old Flacita sitting on my lap trying to kiss me while I read.
WAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh !
My friends wives & novias always ask, why don't you settle down with one woman ?
I reply, "Because they always want me to talk to them"
I hate that shite.
