You can't miss the Del Rey: It's a massive pink corner building with vaguely colonial styling. The lobby continues the facade's theme with pink-tile floors and stone columns. Inside, a carved hardwood door marks every guest room. The rooms vary in size and comfort: There are quiet interior rooms that have no windows, and larger rooms with windows (but also street noise). Try for a sixth-floor room with a balcony. The hotel's 24-hour Del Rey Café serves respectable U.S.-style deli sandwiches, seafood, steaks, and pasta dishes. Much of the first floor is taken up with a lively casino and the neighboring Blue Marlin Bar, which is very popular with tourists, expatriates, and prostitutes.

one of my travel guide books says to avoid the hotel del rey,the most notorious casino in San Jose in their words, because it swarms with prostitutes

also refers to the key largo as the most popular prostitute pick up bar

That's how the DR is usually described in the CR guidebooks, if it's even mentioned at all. Lonely Planet even went so far in their newest edition to rail against "sex tourism" and state that they're not going to list any place that supports or is friendly to prostitution , so the DR, Prez and Amon Plaza aren't mentioned at all.

An exception I found is the CR entry in the Open Road's "Best Of" series. The DR is included in the "Best Sleeps in San Jose", and it and the BM are well-described in a positive tone, even mentioning the web cam on the web site. There's also a tiny sidebar entitled "Risque Nightlife" that's also refreshingly non-hostile.

What hotels do they mention? If they mention the Holiday Inn, Sleep Inn, Balmoral, etc. how is that different then the Amon Plaza? I can understand them mentioning the Grand Hotel Costa Rica and few others that absolutely do not allow female guests but there a lot more that are chica tolerant that are probably mentioned.

ID, it's mostly hostels, B&Bs and boutique-type places, many of which I have never heard of. Let's see, for downtown non-budget they have the Hotel Colonial, Gran Hotel Dona Ines, Gran Hotel Costa Rica and La Gran Via...and the Holiday Inn. That's it. No Balmoral or Sleep Inn. Budget places include Hotel Compostela, Green House Hostel, Pension de la Cuesta, Gran Hotel Centroamericano, and Hotel Los Recuerdos.

Surprisingly, the Nuevo Johnson is included for the Coca Cola terminal area.

The Inca Real is included for the Amon area, and the other recognizable names are the Don Carlos, Britannia and Dunn Inn.

All the reasons they say to avoid DR, are the same reasons i wont avoid it.We dont need stuck up people, and the so called prostitutes are realy therapists.
