Three of us land together. If we all share a taxi, do we need to pay $18.00 each or can we negotiate a better deal with the orange triangle taxi drivers to our hotel?

even with three people.

I don't know what the senior CRTers will say about this but when I left the SJO airport I walked past all of the orange airport cabs. Regular cabs can't enter airport property but if you go down the hill to the street level you can hail a red cab with a yellow triangle on it.

You may ask the driver for a price and he might agree to one or he might just point to the meter and say "Maria."

I had three adults and one 5yo in the cab. I paid $16 (negotiated up front) to get from the airport to the Clarion Amon (we got out at the Clarion but could not get wirless signals in the lobby so we walked up to the Villa Tournan about 1/4 mile or so away.) On the ride back to the airport from the Tournon I believe I paid $13. I might have those figures backwards but point is the round trip was $29.

If you are quick w/numbers you'll be surprised how much money you can save by dealing in Colones and USD. I used a trick with cabbies, etc. when I asked them for a price they almost always gave a price in dollars. I would give a confused look and say "en Colones" and he'd give me that figure.

I can’t stress enough the need to learn numbers in Spanish as the Colones are tossed around by the thousands and if you can’t figure out what “trente y uno mil” (spelling?) means in terms of USD you will have some trouble. This might sound corny but I’d spend some time practicing quick conversions, but I digress…

Have fun

It's per ride, not per person. If you can fit all 3 (w/ suitcases) into one taxi, you still pay $18. If you all have suitcases, you may not all fit into one car. They are pretty small cars, Hyundai Elantras or Toyota Corollas. You my want to consider a Sportsmens Lodge pickup. They can send a van for $20. You will definitely fit. With a $4 tip, you are looking at $8 each.

First lets clear up "orange triangle". Airport cabs are orange and have no triangle on the door. City cabs are red and have a yellow triangle on the door. The number on the triangle and on their license plate should be a match.

If you can not fit 3 guys and luggage in the orange cab they have vans available. Cost should be only a few bucks more so not necessary to call SL for a driver.

Costs for orange and triangle cabs are always per ride. So if you are from Ringling Brothers and Barnum Bailey you can get the cost down to .50 cents each

I fit three my first trip. Three bags in the trunk and three guys in the car. $6 each. Great deal. We had just enough room to fit one more bag between the guys in the back seat. Its a pretty short ride. Just let them know up front if your destinations are different.
