Few trips back to satisfy the traveling group I was with I did the 3-1 tour out of the Presidente...

First stop Coffee Plantation Sorry forgot the name, next stop Poas Volcano then the last stop the Paz Waterfalls.... Nice 3-1 trip that covered many of the bases..

downside..
1. Long day left the Prez 8:00 AM returned 6PM
2. Cold up on the Mtn and wet *DUH* in the Rain Forest I was not dressed for it.
3. Tour Guide herself was pretty lame, but it accomplished alot for one day with littel effort.. I think the price was $75.00 per head... Considering you have a group you might find your own Van with / Driver and create your own tour IT WILL Most likely be cheaper.

Paos is the closest volcano worth going to see (hope that it's not cloudy). Arenal is better suited for a multi-day trip but IMHO is only worth it for the hot springs or if it's going off.

If you go to Poas......don't forget to check out the "super deluxe" restrooms in the Visitor's Center. Some of the nicest restrooms you'll see in Costa Rica. :P

Your hotel will probably have brochures for a five in one day trip from SJ. It is great. you will see a coffee plantation, a waterfall, the cloud forest Poas volcano and a short boat ride in the Rio Sarapiqui (sp?), all in one magnificent day.
