Hey guys , I need some help.
I want to go and check out volcano poas and perhaps la paz waterfalls this next week. Would I be better off to find a tour company or try to just find a taxi driver to drive me up there?
Any reccomendations for particular companys drivers are appreciated.
Thank you
TheDude

In my opinion a reliable taxi driver or independent tour guide is better than taking an organized tour with other tourists.

You get to decide which things you want to see, how long you want to stay at each one, when and where you stop for meals and breaks, have beverages in the car, etc. If you are by yourself it will cost more than a seat on an organized tour. If you have a wingman with you it will most likely cost less and if there are 3 in your party it will definitely be cheaper per person.

If you are going on an adventure tour like white water rafting, ATV, canopy tour, etc. than take the organized tour.

I agree 100%. Hiring a private van and driver is a great value here (especially for parties of 2 or more). It is nice to be able to set your own agenda and go at your own pace. You will certainly be a lot more comfortable.

The expection is if you are traveling alone. Then the case can be made for going with a tour company. In that case it is you might want a little more social contact. But even then, it is hit and miss. You might end up spending an entire day with a fat, annoying pig that constantly complains that there isn't a McDonalds to be found anywhere (or something of that nature). Most people that travel to Costa Rica are pretty cool, but you never know.

Thanks for the advice guys. After reviewing the tour optons once I got there it was a no brainer. I hired Jimmy from the SL. It was great!! He a way cool dude who knows his way around and is alot of fun. Very friendly. All the tours were pricy for what you got, and long, and full of granola gringas. Jimmys price was 100 dollars but it was worth it....to set my own agenda and drink beer while we drove around the beautiful countryside.
If you have more people its defintely more economical.

Also guys, I was charged 19 dollars for taxi ride from the airport. Jimmy charges 20,and will bring beer and probably your favorite tica if you want.

Hey dude, it's nice to see a post from you. I think we shot some pool and hung out a out together last November. Nice to see that you've made it back to CR. I was there last month with esposa, but will have a solo first time mongering trip to Pero in the middle of May.

Regards

EV

Yep, I guess it was May. But, I suppose it wil be six months from my Peru trip before I can come up with another plausible excuse to revisit CR.
