No, usually only VISA and MC are accepted at most places that I've seen. I'm assume AMEX is accepted somewhere, but stick to VISA and MC. Your best choice is VISA though.

Hi Tom,

This may look like crap, as I'm not sure what it looks like if I insert my answers to follow your questions, but here goes:

I am a Marlboro man, and I found Marlboros for aroyund two bucks per pack. However, these are "export" Marbs and may taste a bit different from U.S. Marlboro Reds. The local, cheaper brand closest in flavor to U.S. Marlboros is Belmont, about $1.50/pack.

Other brands, such as Winston or Camel are hard to find. Remember that Costa Rican Customs rules allow you to bring a carton from home.

Cigs are cheap in C.R.

2. Can i find a good dry cleaner for my wrinkled clothes in suitcase?

Of course.

Lavanderia y Dry Clean Camila
Avenida 9 150 metros s. de Hotel Presidente, en puro frente de la Iglesia de la Soledad.

Also, the Presidente, del Rey and Sportsmen's all offer laundry/valet service. I'm sure other hotels do also. The hotel valet/laundry is however, expensive.

3. Is American express Credit cards accepted at most places?

No. Your hotel, probably. Rental car agencies, yes. Big chain restaurants, maybe.
VISA is the credit card of choice here.

4. Is booze availible 24 Hrs. ?

By the drink at the Blue Marlin Bar nad the lobby bar at the Hotel del Rey, other nightclubs until the wee, wee hours. By the bottle: Most supermercados carry a full liquor selection, and fairly cheap.

Suggestion: Buy your favorite top-shelf American brands at the Duty Free shop as you come into Baggage Claim in the airport. Buy local rums, guaro, beers at a supermercado during daylight hours.

5. What are the main suites like at the Hotel Castillo like ie: amenties?
No idea, as I've never stayed there. I know that each room has a key-operated safe, and that the Castillo serves a crappy free breakfast, fine if you like hardboiled eggs.

6. Thats all the questions for right now, that i have, if any others come up i will post, ill be in town on the 7th of March, need a wing man l will be staying at the Castillo, cant wait to meet some of you guys......thx...Tom73b

Tom, be sure to post a Roll Call notice, to let your CRT brothers know that you'll be in town.

Also, don't forget Happy Hour, most afternoons at around five o'clock in the Blue Marlin bar at the Hotel del Rey. Visit the Sportsmen's Lodge early evenings as well. You'll find somebody with whom to wing, no problema!

Welcome to CRT and what will become the greatest adventure and worst addiction of your life!

The only place I could find Kools in CR was in the duty free shop, for $18 a carton. Did not buy them as I brought my own.
Ciaociao

I presume you're in C.R. on business, i.e. your credit card purchases are business related?

I'd be curious as to the shops/restaurants you frequent. Aside from American chains and gringo-ized hotels, I've found nowhere that accepts Amex. So, you and I must patronize much different businesses.

I'm not doubting you in the least, but I'm quite sure we don't shop/eat at the same places.

$1.80/pack for Kools? Sheee-it,, that's cheap. C.C., did you notice if they sell Newports, Benson & Hedges or Parliaments as well?  Yep, it's inexpensive to kill yourself in C.R.

I blame Asia for my smoking habits. I mean, at 30 cents a pack, how can you not smoke!

EC,
Sorry, no I didn't notice those other brands. It could be that they are like the Marlboros and don't have quite the taste. In any event, like with coffee, I am a little bit of a prima donna with cigarettes. I will probably bring my own just to make certain that I have what I want.
