I am buying a new cell phone and thought about giving the old one to "a friend" in CR. Can it be programed to function on the ICE network....or is it better/cheaper just to buy a phone in CR?

Thanks!!!

This has been discussed almost as often as the price of a BM chica. Try a search for more info but the basic is ICE will not program any phone you do not have a receipt for showing it was purchased in CR.

You are better off donating it to a cause that could use a cell phone like Amnesty International which helps provide cell phones in women's shelter for women who can call 911 for help

Or contact your local women's shelter and ask them if you can donate it to them.

Thanks for the quick answer. I know it didn't pick up any signal last time in CR. Since they are a Monopoly it stands to reason they would force you to buy a phone from them........

Bought my new phone today....

If you get the phone unlocked, they can take the SIM card out of the ICE phone and put it into the new one. Key is, get the phone unlocked here and they have to have service down there.

There must be a way, I was asked twice on my last trip if I had a phone I could send them. I just told them no, but I do have one that’s not to old I do not use it any more. I was thinking of bringing it next time and giving it away

ID.... I don't know a thing about cell phones in CR. I can only tell you my experience. A Colombian amiga and I go to ICE (1/24/07) to pay her late bill. She has them crank her service back up and they issue her a new SIM card on the spot because she wants a new phone. She has NOT bought a new phone as of yet. We leave and go to San Pedro mall and she finds a new phone she likes. The cell phone guys install the SIM card for her and she pays up for the phone. The phone was operational the next day.

In this case, ICE did not know where the new cell phone came from.

This entire episode may be a fluke.

Berk.......

Depends on the phone type and service. ICE, at a minimum, supports GSM, like Cingual/AT&T. Not all phones have a SIM card. Want to buy my old Sprint StarTAC? Give you a good deal. Still picks up a nice CDMA signal here in the US.

It has to be a GSM phone. T-Mobile, Cingular have GSM but make sure its a quad band phone. Most phones made in the last year are quad band. Look on ebay you can find them cheap. It doesnt matter the style they will love you.
