Ditto.

I do not believe anyone on this site is using the word "Puta" in a derogotary manner. The problem is too many conflicted and delusional norte-americanoes confused about sex, love and their mongering ways.

The chicas have no problem calling each other putas. Think about it this way. In spanish countries most people have a moniker that their family has bestowed upon them at a very young age and is seen as a term of endearment. i.e., Black, Fasto, Limpy, Skinny, Loco, Loca, Chicken Little, Clown, Hair One, Red Hair, Very Chubby, Shorty, Crooked Foot. Now how would you feel if the K*ds in the neigborhood started calling your K*D Fasto, how would that make you feel? Well in latin countries the parents use the same word, only in spanish, to refer to their son whom they love.

My nephew has been called "Fat Little ONe" since he was a Ch*ld and no one in my family, inlcuding himself, seems to have a problem with this. We all love "El Gordito."

It all comes down to cultural differences and we as mongering norte-americanos need to adapt to how the rest of the world lives. They don't give a shit what you call them as long as you show them love and respect.

Let's not get our panties in a bunch, we need to start acting like MEN again. Remember, your intentions are admirable but we have been brainwashed in this country to act more like women. The chicas have no respect for these type of guys. They will walk all over you every step they get. It's a sign of weekness and in countries where you need to be strong to survive each day you will be viewed as a very weak person.

Bonus question: Does anyone know what the chicas call HDR/KL?

I can't belive this is a topic.

My wife calls any women that pisses her off a Puta and my wife is a tica.
My mother in law calls working girls putas!

In Costa Rica POLITICALY correct is not in their dictionary!

Call the putas what you may but in a country that calls black people Neagros and the normall saying is Heua puta, Puta is still a puta.

Pura Vida!

Business Girl works for me. I know one girl that some of her family call her a Puta and it hurts her feelings. They like the money she makes though. Sure she is a Puta and i am a gimp but unless you are a personal friend i won't stand for someone calling me a gimp.

Don't worry Florida, they know what they are, just treat them like human beings and you'll be fine, but they are what they are!
By the way, I know what I am also, and I don't have any problem with it, as a matter of fact, I love it!

I do not know the answer but will throw this out as a thought  .

Are chicas who call each other putas much like black guys who use the "n"
among themselves but consider it degrading when used by someone else :?:

What's the difference between a "business girl" and a puta?
Even if I were your personal friend, why should I call you a gimp (first time I hear that word)? Don't you have a name?
The fact that I know that a woman is a "puta" doesn't mean that I'm going to mistreat her in any way. As for somebody calling me a gimp, I think I would look at him, smile and say: "maybe you're lucky enough and some day you'll be like me".
If it's a her, then "you're right I am, when the time is right, you know where to find me!".
Now, if you call me Cuban, then you'll be in trouble!

Ouch - that hurts!!!

New 'honest' tag line for CostaRicaTicas.com (replacing the current "A Gentlemen's guide to Costa Rica!"):

"A Bunch of Hapless Bastards That Can't Get Laid Without Paying For It In a Foreign Country guide to Costa Rica"...

Well, a little wordy - better stick to the current one...

I don't really have the answer. She seems to like it though. As for the gimp phrase. My friends rarely if ever use it and then just in a joking manner in some part of a conversation.

I'm a hapless bastard that can afford to go to a foreign country ... afford to pay for hot young latinas .. and dosen't have to answer to any loudmouthed gringas about it. The putas are going to think what they want. Some of it is rooted in jealousy and has always been that way. We shouldn't care too much ... in most cases its just the opinion of an uneducated , inmature young girl. Still I wouldn't call one puta to her face unless she really pissed me off pretty bad. On another note ... I really do wish they would come up with a more pleasant sounding name than "gringo" for us. Something about it is just annoying to me.

you're right, GR. That title just doesnt have the same ring to it.

Anyway, this is no disrespect to any of you guys or any of the "chikas aka working chikas aka sexual entrepreneurs aka lady of the night aka what the F ever" but what is the world coming to when CRT has PC policia? I agree that these women are humans and should be treated with the respect you'd give any other human and politeness does go a long way in any situation. But to take resevation to the word "puta" is a little out there. Think about what these chikas hear from gringos, exuse me, "american males" day in and day out. Think about all those "interview questions" they are asked everyday. BBBJ, CIM, greek, 2, 3, 4-some. You seriously think the word "puta" makes them blush. I doubt it.

But I digress. To bring this thread back to what it started as... These "questionable women" won't see or get offended at any of what is written as long as guys KEEP THEM OFF THE FORUM.

CRBound...good points  ...

Its interesting to me how all cultures and histories have had different descriptions and attitudes towards putas...I mean "working girls". And the same words, titles or names can mean all different things to different people. So, taking the word "Puta" in context of the culture or country it is used in can make it appropriate...or in-appropriate...to use. To talk about "putas" in general in these countries is pretty common and accepted as Ticoyo points out. But then, to call a woman a "puta" to her face is normally NOT accepted, obviously. At the same time, I would argue it is much like the word GRINGO. It definitely has negetive history as to the origins of the term, but now has become more commonly accepted to describe North Americans. Yet, if some chica calls me "hey Gringo"...quite honestly, I dont like or appreciate it. At the same time, I understand what they are saying when they use the term.

And...what terms are MORE acceptable down here? Not too many. And to just say "working girl"...what does THAT mean? Any girl that has any job is a "working girl". Lets take it one step further (I think I am doing a Prolijo impression here  )...many of us call these putas "Novias" or "Amor"...same as we would wives or regular girlfriends. Is this a good thing? Shouldnt there be some difference between how we address our wives or girlfriends versus how we address a puta/whore/working girl? It doesnt neccessarily have to be a negetive term...in the ears of either party...to describe the relationship or role.

All of these gyrations to point out that...semantics and this discussion can easily be carried to an extreme. One mans Puta is another mans Wife. Sure, we need to respect all human kind...but we have to have appropriate words or labels to describe what we mean...dont we?

Interesting discussion...

For what its worth, they refer to eachother as "Putas" and the Del Ray as "El Putero" in some cases. They know they are whores and they know they work in a whore house. These are the literal definitions in Spanish. Why are we all so sensitive? If you listen to them talk, practically every sentence has the word puta in it. In fact, in their spanish it is practically a conjunction or a preposition. They don't take offense providing you use the word without a "mean" or "demeaning" tone and in a general context, not personal.

Wait... I think we should go back to calling them "novias" and continue honoring their RFMs. This makes a whole lot more sense to me.

God... aren't we just a bunch of "soft bellies"??? ...wait... please don't take offense to that... I meant "gringos."

According to CAdude to avoid insulting your future wife :o we should refer to them as "little darlings"...

There was an chief electrician working aboard from New Orleans, Ralph Griffin.

Anyway, one day Ralph and I were chatting about this and that and he asked me about my girlfriends.

"Well", I replied, "I do have this little whore I'm seeing back home"

"Tut, tut Johnny", Ralph replied, "Never call them whores, call them 'little darlings'".

"Why chief?", I asked.

"Because", Ralph replied, "years from now we'll meet again somewhere and start to reminense. And 9 times of of 10, when I ask you what ever happened to that "whore" you were going out with, you end up telling me 'ah, I married her'".

"So" Ralph sagely advised, "always, always call them 'little darlings'".
